New shipping/climate research from @TyndallManc assesses:
i) whether the new @IMOHQ targets are compatible with Paris climate goals
ii) what these targets mean for the imminent refresh of the UK @transportgovuk Clean Maritime Plan

The world has warmed on average ~1°C in the last 80 years. Where will it go in the next 80?
* It looks like we have avoided the worse >3°C
* Current action is consistent with 2-3°C (& rising after 2100)
* Emissions need to go net zero <2100 to ensure <2°C, the earlier the better!

Three Decades of Climate Mitigation
What have we achieved?
* 60% rise in fossil CO₂ emissions
* Half of all fossil CO₂ emitted (since 1990)
* Developed countries dominate CO₂ emissions per person

The @IMOHQ set their climate targets against a 2008 baseline.
@TyndallManc calculates that since 2008, shipping has already used half of its Paris-compatible carbon budget for 1.5 degrees.
@IMOHQ needs to set tougher climate targets and policies asap, #MEPC77

Can shipping cut emissions fast enough? 50 or so captains and crew here, charting a course at @MalinGroup #cop26 event, here's the map so far: lots of pink = (concerns) but also yellow (hope), and blue (ideas)...

'Air Lubrication Systems' reduce the viscous resistance component of the hull of the ship by creating a layer of air bubbles below the hull of the ship. This reduces frictional resistance between the hull and the seawater @TheICCT says it can reduce up to 10% of fuel consumption

We stand with @RMI_Govt and Solomon Islands in calling for a $100 levy on #climate emissions from #shipping.
The world has already warmed to ~1.3C. A $2 levy on fuel is not a "moonshot" and industry knows it.

@simonbullock @JamesClimate @Lois_climate @AliceClimate @Andrew_welfle @KA_Nicholas @sachbon @lwhitmarsh @steviedubyu Data is for European states engaged in Eurocontrol. Though data is for 2020 (Covid year), similar figures exist for 2019 (6% flights gave rise to 48% of CO2).
6.2% of 2020 flights were over 4,000km, but caused 51.9% of emissions! eurocontrol.int/sites/defaul…
