So why haven't we bent the emissions curve in 30 years?
We conclude power concentrated in 'elites' is a major obstacle to change annualreviews.org/doi/full/1…

Which country is going to cut production to compensate for the UK’s increase? Jackdaw means additional gas production & emissions, not substitution.
Worse, it sends a dangerous signal: backsliding on climate commitments is acceptable, provided you dress it up as “pragmatism”.

‘Pragmatism cannot negotiate with physics. More fossil fuels, when burned, mean more CO₂, higher global temperatures, greater climate impacts and increased risks of crossing dangerous tipping points. Political compromise cannot change that.’

A hastily drafted post following the UK Govt’s decision to approve further drilling & production at the Jackdaw gas field in the N.Sea. Please excuse typos, non-sequiturs, etc - I wanted to get the post online today.

The ability to hit multiple nails squarely on the head is a useful skill, but I fear many in government prefer bent nails. Physics has its own rules and they're non-negotiable and laugh in the face of claimed "pragmatism".

"El Gobierno [británico] ha presentado su decisión como pragmática. Pero el pragmatismo es un marco político, no una característica intrínseca del sistema climático. Un mayor consumo de combustibles fósiles, al quemarse, implica más CO₂ en la atmósfera, temperaturas globales +

You’ve heard the views of ministers, other politicians, the global heating industry and compliant media, now hear the view of science.

Let’s not forget that we all bear some responsibility - the burning is made worse by climate crisis but palm oil interests appear to be starting some fires and encouraging continuation, to use the burned land for plantations. Stop using palm oil!

Exactly this .. I love cities built around people not cars, so much better to live in ❤️

I take a slightly different view: start with better urban planning, then walking, cycling, e-bikes, public transport (from buses & trams to trains & coaches) - and then appropriately sized BEVs for the rural areas & rental BEVs in the towns and cities.
Hybrids were only ever a waypoint, and their story is often misunderstood
Hybrids are temporary solutions
PHEVs are conditional transition vehicles
As capability grows, BEVs are the final answer.

Putting urban planning first makes so much sense — way too many cities are still designed around the car first. Love the hierarchy here.

Speaking tomorrow at New Scientist Live with Profs Behrens & Seddon.
The Paris climate challenge is not a matter of urgency, but of emergency. Urgency seeks to accelerate change; emergency demands a fundamentally different policy & technology agenda.

They made a fundamental mistake in allowing nations’ Climate aspirations to be tied to a moderate degree of warming, instead of giving proper attention to extreme risk. Many publicly espouse a false Optimism that technology can bale us out.
Quoted in the Guardian today on the technical hopium that, in my experience, has become widespread among many, usually senior, climate experts.

Tweeted the other day about a leading climate scientist publicising his transatlantic speaking engagements.
On a previous occasion when I asked why such things shouldn't be done on Zoom, his answer was words to the effect that we're social animals.....

their own ‘street-level’ power stations, etc, etc. The people who do the actual physical labour that the climate science (& blithe scientists) prescribes. They don’t require ‘government action’. That’s how social movements succeed.

I see this pattern but hope that there are not enough ‘climate scientists’ to have much of an adverse effect. The environmental movement is not just scientists & protesters. There are people restoring wetlands, rewilding, building green corridors, using refill shops, setting up

Nuclear power was historically a highly subsidized energy option (benefit of legacy subsidies).
Less a share of global subsidies today (FF gets 70%!) but SMR subsidies are propping up the nuclear option today.
