In 1942, America was at war. Alaska needed fuel. Japanese subs could sink transports.
There was oil at Norman Wells in Canada’s Northwest Territories.
The problem?
It was on the other side of one of the most remote mountain ranges on earth.
So they decided to build a pipeline across it. 1/5

Late breaking Friday good news: Roberts Bank Terminal 2, the major expansion of Canada’s biggest port, the Port of Vancouver, has become the second major project to be designated in the national interest.
It’s where the Pacific Link pipeline terminus is also expected to be.

After 262 days in hospital, Maya is finally going home.
Her incredible courage and fighting spirit, and the unwavering love of her family, are an inspiration.
Maya, you have amazed us all. May God bless you with continued strength and healing on the road ahead.
262 days.
It’s been 262 days since you were airlifted to BC Children’s Hospital.
262 days since we were told, “We did everything we could, but we don’t think she’s going to make it through the night.”
Since then, I’ve watched you fight for every single one of those days.
251 days ago, you opened your eye, moved it, and shifted your leg only to be rushed back for emergency surgery that morning when hydrocephalus set in.
238 days ago, you were extubated and breathed on your own for the first time.
230 days ago, you felt the sun on your face again.
224 days ago, the cranioplasty we had planned turned into yet another emergency when an infection was discovered.
214 days ago, your EVD was finally removed.
213 days ago, you sat on the edge of the bed with a little help, and I wrapped my arms around you for the first time since the morning I left for work before any of this began.
191 days ago, the NG tube came out, and I saw your beautiful face completely clear of tubes and tape.
179 days ago, your prosthetic skull was placed. Your fifth surgery, and the one that finally stuck. After that, things slowly began to feel possible again.
145 days ago, you smiled for the first time (intentionally) while we played thumb war.
140 days ago, I wheeled you off hospital grounds for the very first time.
61 days ago, I heard your voice again.
40 days ago, we celebrated your 13th birthday at the Foo Fighters.
And today, today you’re being released.
There was never a day I stopped believing we would get here. The road ahead is still long, but this is a milestone no one thought we would reach. Maya, you are the bravest person I know. You are an inspiration to so many people. Giving up was never an option for me, and it clearly never was for you either. You refused to accept the words we heard 262 days ago when you came out of the OR. Look at you, my girl. You blew every expectation out of the water.
Thank you to the incredible nurses, doctors, and therapists who walked every step of this with us. Thank you to everyone who supported Maya and our family we could not have done this without each and every one of you.
Now it’s time to leave these hospital walls behind and keep moving forward, Maya Bear.
I love you forever and always.

The wall of money that is coming towards governments from the upstream sector is difficult to comprehend. In the first 9 months of 2026 @ImperialOil has paid more in cash taxes and royalties than it did in either all of '24 or '25...and there is 3 months to go. Moreover, when compared to the first 9 months in '25 $IMO.TO has paid 110% more cash taxes and 53% more royalties.

For the third time, Canada's appellate Courts have determined the Impact Assessment Act to be unconstitutional.
My colleague Martin Ignasiak, one of Canada’s top lawyers on energy regulation, argues the federal government should not appeal, but instead focus on developing amendments or a new statute that is consistent with the original intention of federal environmental assessment. In the meantime it should immediately amend the designated project list and remove oil and gas projects, mining projects and renewable projects.

Canada could be selling 250,000 barrels of oil per day.
At a premium price into Asian markets.
Without costing taxpayers a cent.
But Carney’s ban on shipping means we are selling our oil at a discount to the U.S. costing Canadians billions every year.
It makes no sense.
Repeal the ban!

By voting against Bill C-264, the Liberals voted to keep barriers that block new energy exports and leave Canada dependent on the U.S. market.
Lifting the tanker ban would help open our West Coast to new opportunities, attract investment, and create well-paying jobs. Canadian workers deserve a government that backs their livelihoods and gets Canadian energy to our allies.

🇨🇦🛢️😱 Western Canadian Select crude differentials continue to get crushed, now $31/bbl below WTI in Hardisty, Alberta.
That's tied for the widest spread in late-2022, and before that the late-2018 diff blowout that forced production curtailment in early 2019.
But this time it isn't pipeline capacity shortages—the transportation proxy (far right chart) is completely line.
This rout is being entirely driven by the diff at Houston, now at an all-time high of >$23/bbl.
That normally means an issue with light-heavy quality, which is partly to blame here. But this time it's much more driven by our record-high tanker rate environment.
Canadian heavy crude *re*exports out of the US Gulf Coast have historically gone as far as India, which is an exceptionally expensive trip (~10x normal) atm.
Combine that with additional Venezuelan crude availability this year and you need to heavily discount your barrel to get someone to bite, and it's this small pool of marginal barrels that are dragging down the entire Western Canadian pricing complex.
The brutal irony is that just at the moment Canada is finally diversifying exports to Asia that the long trip to Asia becomes a serious pricing vulnerability in this spiked tanker market.
Tanker rates have also widened the spread between WTI and Brent, so WCS gets the double-whammy of the compounding diffs.

I’m calling Mark Carney’s bluff.
A Canadian energy company will pay to upgrade the Port of Prince Rupert so it can ship 250,000 barrels per day of Alberta energy by rail to the Pacific Ocean.
There are supportive Conservative governments in Saskatchewan, Alberta, and now in B.C. The public supports diversifying our economy away from the United States. Our environmental protections remain world-class.
This is as close to unanimous as we’re ever going to see in a democracy of 40 million people.
All you have to do is extend the same exemption to the tanker ban that you’ve given to the Port of Vancouver.
This doesn’t need a new committee, a new major projects office, or a nickel of Canadian taxpayer money, and It’ll create jobs across the country to build new rail cars.
So what’s it going to be, Mark?

Not making sense to a lot of people.
I'm not an economist so can someone please explain to me how raising interest rates due to rising prices caused by the Iran war will do anything but kick Canadians when they're down?
I understand the principle when our economy is growing too fast causing inflation, but this just doesn't make sense to me.

In case anyone was worried that more Canadian oil exports to Asia would conflict with American interests - here is the Atlantic Council advocating for it to advance East Asian energy security.
"If the East Asian democracies—Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea—decide that Western Canada’s Pacific Link project is meritorious, they should consider investing in coker retrofits at existing refineries to intake Canada’s heavy oil sands crude...
The US oil export complex might not be able to sustain exports at its current levels indefinitely. A growing number of analyses find that crude oil production in the Permian Basin will plateau, or even begin to decline, as prime acreage is exhausted. If the largest and most important basin in the United States faces output declines, and is not paired with concomitant decreases in demand, then US crude oil exports to Europe and East Asia will decline."

This is a major reason why new homes aren't being built.
Municipal and provincial red tape is adding at least 40% more costs to the price of a new home. In some jurisdictions, red-tape is more than the value of materials and labour.

My latest: there’s pain at the pump. Some of this is inescapable fallout from conflicts in the Middle East and Russia/Ukraine. But much of it is self-imposed. The clean fuel regulations cost 13.57 cents a litre for diesel and 12.24 cents a litre for gasoline. To add insult to injury, tax is charged on top of these costs. Even worse, to comply with them, refiners must blend in biofuels such as ethanol and biodiesel. Canada is not self-sufficient and imports over half of what it needs, predominantly from the US.
Somehow, in the middle of a trade war and an energy crisis, it has gone unnoticed that Canada — the aspiring energy superpower — has artificially made itself dependent on the United States for fuel.

Gentle reminder that the whole reason the Trudeau government had to buy the Trans Mountain pipeline was because John Horgan was threatening to illegally blockade it, which probably would have resulted in BC being sued into utter oblivion.
