Rail and port work stoppages threaten the reliability of Canada's pulse exports, with economic losses beginning even before operations stop as customers turn to other suppliers. New federal legislation, Bill C-39, takes steps to address these risks, incorporating several priorities Pulse Canada has advanced on behalf of the sector. However, gaps remain that could limit its effectiveness in preventing disruptions and protecting exporters.

Canadian peas are making waves in shrimp farming. 🦐
A new trial tested Canadian starch-enriched pea flour as a full replacement for wheat flour in shrimp feed.
Compared with the standard diet, the pea-based diet showed:
✅ The same growth and survival
✅ Feed pellets that held together just as well
✅ Stronger immune activity, with no signs of stress
✅ Taller, more slender intestinal villi, pointing to healthier guts and more capacity to absorb nutrients
As wheat flour becomes costlier and harder to source, aquaculture buyers are looking for alternatives. These results point to a new export opportunity for Canadian pea processors.

At just under 42 million tonnes, Mexico has the 5th largest feed market in the world. Mexico is highly reliant on imported grains and ingredients for its livestock feed and pet food sector, which makes it a key growth market for Canadian peas: an affordable, sustainably grown ingredient with functional benefits for feed and pet food.
CLANA (XI Congreso Latinoamericano de Nutrición Animal) was an important place to make the case for Canadian peas. The congress is one of the region's leading animal nutrition events, drawing about 600 nutritionists, industry representatives and academics from across Mexico, Central America and South America. These are the people who decide which ingredients go into feed and pet food.

Canada's pulse industry has released an updated and expanded version of the National Pulse Research Strategy, a roadmap to guide research investment toward a profitable, competitive and sustainable pulse sector.
The strategy's vision has three parts.
➡️ Pulses should be a profitable choice for Canadian farms, human health, animal nutrition and environmental sustainability.
➡️ Canadian pulses should be the preferred choice for customers around the world.
➡️ And Canada should be recognized for collaborative, nationally coordinated research that drives innovation across the sector.

MPSG is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Dennis Lange, whose steady expertise and practical guidance shaped Manitoba’s pulse and soybean sector. Dennis played a key role in expanding soybean and dry bean production, helping growers make confident, balanced decisions through field days, diagnostic schools, workshops, farm visits, webinars, and variety trial data interpretation. His integrity, mentorship, and dedication strengthened our industry well beyond the field - supporting youth, growers, processors, and colleagues across the value chain.
To honour Dennis’s dedication to learning and his support for young people entering the agricultural industry, MPSG is establishing three $1,000 scholarships known as the Dennis Lange Pulse and Soybean Scholarship. These awards will be for Manitoba students pursuing post secondary education in agriculture. Two scholarships will be offered at the University of Manitoba, one for a degree program and one for a diploma program, and one will be offered at Assiniboine College. These awards will recognize students who demonstrate curiosity, integrity, leadership, and a commitment to advancing agriculture in Manitoba, qualities Dennis embodied every day. Dennis’s legacy will continue through the students he mentored, the growers he supported, and the industry he helped strengthen with humility, dedication, and respect. We will miss you, Dennis.

A quick clarification following a recent misleading article:
Prairie Fava previously held both a Processor Elevator Licence and a Grain Dealer Licence. We voluntarily discontinued our Grain Dealer Licence as our business has evolved to focus on what we do best - processing prairie grown fava beans through our own facility, rather than merchandising grain that doesn't move through our plant.
For our growers, nothing changes. Our focus remains on creating demand, adding value to your crop, and investing in the future of Canadian fava beans.
