Happy World Wildlife Day! As a Co-Chair of the Animal Protection Caucus, I have always prioritized the safety and preservation of our wildlife. That's why I led the effort to ban the private ownership of big cats 🐯

What a phenomenal week this has been! There's lots to read about big cats rn, but definitely check out this great article from @NatGeo (featuring the ever articulate and endlessly knowledgeable @kdylewsky)
The industry that 'Tiger King’ made famous will soon be illegal. U.S. legislation awaiting the president's signature will ban cub petting, tiger selfies, and breeding big cats as pets. But what does that mean for the thousands of captive big cats? nationalgeographic.com/anima…

After years of work and advocacy, the Big Cat Public Safety Act passed the Senate and is headed to @POTUS’ desk to be signed into law! Law enforcement and community members will be safer, and big cats will live better lives thanks to this bill and @RepMikeQuigley 🎉🐯
Remember #TigerKing? Through the drama and twists, it showed a real issue: the inhumane exploitation of these majestic animals. We’re bringing the #BigCatPublicSafetyAct to end these practices up for a vote, and I’m glad to have helped move it forward through our committee.

The #BigCatPublicSafetyAct has passed the Senate and will now go to @POTUS to be signed into law! The bill prohibits private possession of and public contact with #bigcats like #lions, #tigers, and #leopards, effectively putting an end to the #exoticpet trade in big cats!

This bill wouldn’t have gotten done without the passion and persistence of @RepMikeQuigley. Thank you so much for the nonstop fight for big cats! 🐯🐯🐯
Tonight my bill the Big Cat Public Safety Act passed the Senate and is headed to @POTUS’s desk to be signed into law! This is a good one. Law enforcement will be safer, and a lot of big cats will live better lives. Thank you to everyone who has supported this bill!

A friendly reminder that five out of six conservative Justices on the Supreme Court were appointed by Presidents that lost the popular vote.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
George W Bush lost the popular vote in 2000 (but won it in 2004) before appointing Alito and Roberts in 2005 during his second term. He is still a president who lost the popular vote. Trump lost the popular vote in 2016 and appointed 3 justices during his single term. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2000_Unit… en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_f… en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_f…

The Court's decision to overturn Roe endangers women everywhere, by taking away their right to make their own health care choices. This court isn't conservative – it's partisan, with a socially backward agenda. They can't be trusted to protect our rights, so the Congress must.

.@NationalZoo Have you considered that instead of killing a fox for being a fox, you shouldn't have stuck exotic birds in the middle of their natural habitat? Slaughtering native wildlife because it outsmarted you is really terrific "conservation" work
The National Zoo says the red fox that allegedly killed two dozen flamingos was euthanized because it was considered "an ongoing threat." bit.ly/3li74Ij

Hoping with this funding in the FY22 omnibus bill, @NOAA @SeaGrant can fully launch the Young Fishermen’s Development Program this year!
Big thank you to @SenDanSullivan @lisamurkowski @SenatorCollins @SenMarkey and @chelliepingree for continuing to champion #youngfishermen and fighting to secure @NOAA $ for the Young Fishermen's Development Act in the FY22 Omnibus bill.
(1/2) Earlier this month, the America COMPETES Act passed the House of Representatives with several exciting provisions that would benefit animals. One such provision would strengthen enforcement of the #LaceyAct, our nation’s first #wildlife protection law.

This morning, I submitted the following statement for the record to @NRDems about my Refuge from Cruel Trapping Act. When folks visit their local National Wildlife Refuges, most expect to view wildlife without fear that they or their pets will fall victim to a dangerous trap.

It took almost the full twelve months, but this (including and especially the update!) is the best thing I’ve read all year.
AITA for “perpetuating ethnic stereotypes” about Jorts? bit.ly/3ytjsLC

Meet Willis, a vervet monkey recently rescued in #IL01. Willis was purchased online and transported across state lines. While he is now safe in the care of a sanctuary, dangerous predicaments like his are all too common. That is exactly why we need the Captive Primate Safety Act.

Two of these children were hit (in a crosswalk) on National Walk to School Day. C'mon, DC - this is unconscionable. Do better.
