The NFL has 32 teams and 14 teams make finals. Each regular season game carries significant weight and thus is compelling. The NBA has 30 teams, 20 teams are eligible for finals (including play in tournament). The NBA is losing significant interest d.t the reg season being too long and less meaningful. There's a lesson in that. If big crowds and excitement is the KPI, then why stop at 10th for our Wildcard round? Why not extend it to 11th-14th? Those additional wildcard games will also produce excitement, big crowds and a TV audience? Knockout sport is exciting. The right to participate in the finals should be earned via the 23 preceding H&A games. Not via a single sugar hit game which we justify as being a good idea because a big crowd attended. What was the benefit for the Dees for finishing 7th instead of 10th? The game was played at the MCG, both teams home field. Why push for those extra wins if you're going to end up in the wild card race instead of 6th? The AFL's modus operandi is to introduce a change for something that is not broken only to create a different set of problems that they didn't envisage. Will we see teams clearly trapped in the wild card bracket a few rounds out start to rest players etc? With injuries being the way they were this yr, and perhaps minimal benefit from finishing higher up the ladder, it wouldn't shock me. The Finals should consist of the top 8 and begin immediately following the H&A season. That first round is knockout football. It will be equally as exciting, and consist of the teams that have earnt the right to be there.

Port Adelaide was fined $100,000 for breaking concussion protocols during a game. Geelong put it in writing with the blessing of the AFL, and systematically avoided concussion protocols, and have been cleared by the AFL. This league is (at the very least) corrupt.

4. Selwood 10% int on a loan to a club sponsor known to be a criminal, the excess interest never declared in the sal cap, no penalty. 5. waiver from a player over concussion which would mean they would not have to consider the player’s welfare in any decision made about him relating to concussion. Punishment: 17 clubs get a memo not to do this and Cats get to delete the clause

With Ryan Mansell out with a foot injury we now have 5 players on the injury list with foot complaints. There are 7 players out with foot injuries in the rest of the AFL combined.

All charges against Steven May and Dion Prestia following an alleged incident in Sorrento from Dec 2024 have been dropped. The prosecution has been ordered to pay their costs. Prestia and May always vehemently maintained their innocence. @7AFL @1116sen
Amid conjecture over whether Dion Prestia and/or Steven May were physically present when a fight broke out in Sorrento last December… a witness has come forward. The witness gave a sworn statement to police confirming both players were not there. The witness, Prestia and May know who was involved in the scuffle, but have not revealed any names to authorities. @9NewsMelb @FootyonNine @1116sen

I'm getting close to giving up on this account. HTB officiation absolutely shocking tonight (and not just that) The poor umpiring at the AFL level is starting to ruin games. Both games this weekend officiated appallingly #AFLTigersDees

99% of AFL fans want nothing but the best for Elijah Hollands ( or any player or fellow human struggling for that matter ) ✔️ 99% of AFL fans want to know why a player with muscle tightness is put on ice, yet one with an elevated HR, zero sleep and Erratic behaviour is not ❌

3 weeks……shouldn’t be…. BUT…. In the words of the @AFL Tribunal in Rhyan Mansell’s ridiculous 3 week suspension when he & Aish collided at full throttle … "His hands were not reaching for the ball." #clownshow #AFLHawksPies 🤡🤡🤡
Collingwood players got around Jeremy Howe before he was taken off the ground following a collision. #AFLHawksPies

One thing that is quite apparent under the current AFL Administration is their particular focus on metrics. The footy public are often perplexed as to how the exec can have a certain view-point when so many feel the exact opposite. The answer is because they seem to be driven by optimising for specific metrics. In Laura Kane's now infamous "the game is in great shape" interview it was v.clear what sort of things they look to optimise for. Jeff Bezos nicely explains the issue with managing your way to optimising for metrics. I specifically like his line: "when the data and the anecdotes disagree, the anecdotes are usually right". And right now my sense is that the AFL executive focusses far too much on the metrics and does not take the anecdotes (opinions of footy public) into account enough. Hence Dillon can inexplicably say that the SCG surface was fine when anyone with functioning eyesight could see it clearly was not. It didn't matter that players couldn't keep their feet, the grass metrics showed it was safe. I've included these Bezos comments i'm referring to in the replies.
Interesting chat with Andrew Dillon on Fireball @1116sen. Worth a listen in full but a few comments caught my attention State of the game: In unbelievable shape Ideal bye rounds: What we did this year or 1 less week Umpires: Doing a very good job SCG: Ground was absolutely safe

I miss the good ol’ days like "February 2025" where a broken jaw which required surgery + concussion weren’t even deemed low impact. Ah, those were the days. #clownshow #AFL

Since North Melbourne have started their rebuild, Richmond have won 3 flags, started a rebuild, and already progressed further through their rebuild than North. On top of this, they have our first round pick for this season. We are an absolute fucking disgrace. #AFLTigersSuns
