“Today the High Court has confirmed what we have said from day one: the treason charge was a political fabrication. The prosecution failed to prove any intention to intimidate the government.
Instead of ordering my release after 577 days in detention, the court has convicted me of an offence I was never charged with and never given a chance to defend.
This is not justice. This is damage control.
History will record how the court searched for a lesser charge simply to keep me in prison.” Tundu Antipas Lissu

#BREAKING: MARAGA SLAMS LISSU TREASON TRIAL AS 'LEGALLY BANKRUPT', CALLS FOR IMMEDIATE FREEDOM
Former Kenyan Chief Justice David Maraga has called for the immediate acquittal of Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu, describing the treason case against him as a "legally bankrupt" prosecution ahead of the High Court's judgment.
In a strongly worded statement released through the United Green Movement (UGM) Party, Maraga said the evidence presented against the CHADEMA chairman failed to meet the legal threshold required to sustain a treason charge. He argued that political dissent, peaceful assembly and calls for electoral reforms cannot constitute treason under the law.
Maraga further accused governments in the East African region of increasingly using treason and terrorism charges to sideline opposition figures and suppress criticism, warning that such actions threaten democratic governance and fundamental freedoms.
The former Chief Justice also expressed solidarity with Lissu, his family and supporters, insisting that the future of the East African Community lies in constitutional reforms, democratic accountability and respect for human rights.
His remarks came as Tanzania's High Court prepares to deliver its highly anticipated ruling in Lissu's treason case, a matter that has drawn widespread regional and international attention.

Tundu Lissu should never have been arrested, let alone prosecuted and convicted.

All people of goodwill and supporters of democracy across the world are relieved to see the trumped up treason charges against Comrade Tundu Lissu collapse, following his acquittal today.
These charges should never have been brought in the first place. Lissu’s only crime was to call for basic reforms to the electoral architecture in Tanzania to guarantee a fair process. He has lost over two years of his life in custody as he fought off the charges.
We encourage Ndugu Lissu, the CHADEMA Party and all our Tanzanian brothers to take heart and remain strong in their pursuit of justice and freedom, in the knowledge that all forces of regression are usually ultimately defeated.

As an American constitutional lawyer, I have personally litigated cases defending the rights to free expression and due process. These are fundamental principles of human liberty. For that reason, I am closely following the outcome of Tundu Lissu’s trial proceedings, and the broader implications for the rule of law.
After a big night for Democrats across the country in Tuesday night's midterm elections, former President Barack Obama said American voters sent a "clear message," but added that Democrats now need to "roll up our sleeves" and "prevent further damage."
"These results were only possible because outstanding candidates stepped forward in every region of the country — including in areas once considered long shots," said the former president, who held several rallies for Democratic candidates in recent weeks. cbsn.ws/4BEGwXT
