When you are watching a new sci-fi movie in the plane about an extraterrestrial fungus….. and it wants it to be safely stored in the @utmbhealth GNL 😀
In 2008, our lab presented the first evidence that uPAR regulates the kidney filtration barrier nature.com/articles/nm1696
Numerous studies from our lab and others followed.
Tomorrow @ASNKidney, we will see what happens when antibody WAL0921 is given to humans blocking (s)uPAR in kidney disease.

🧠 Could a brain enzyme help preserve memory with age?
A new Nature Neuroscience study links PLA2G2F to reduced inflammation and better memory in ageing mice, highlighting brain lipid metabolism as a potential avenue for protecting cognitive health.
Human evidence remains preliminary.

✨ An Evening of Elegance, Generosity & Impact ✨
We were delighted to having attended the 30th Anniversary Gala of Houston Children’s Charity, a wonderful evening celebrating three decades of making a meaningful difference in the lives of children and families in need.
Beyond the elegance and celebration, what makes an evening like this truly special is the shared commitment to giving back, strengthening our community, and creating opportunities for children to thrive.
A beautiful reminder that the greatest measure of success is not only what we achieve, but also the positive impact we make on the lives of others.
Thank you to Houston Children’s Charity for 30 years of extraordinary work and for bringing together so many people who believe in the power of compassion and generosity.

Congratulations to Gene Olinger, director of the Galveston National Laboratory at UTMB, on receiving the prestigious Fulbright Specialist Program Award from the U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (@FulbrightPrgrm).
Gene's scientific expertise and leadership have been instrumental in advancing research and helping establish new opportunities for artificial intelligence at @utmbhealth.
This well-deserved recognition will take him to Dublin, Ireland, where he will share his expertise through educational and training activities, further strengthening international collaboration.
I have no doubt Gene will represent UTMB exceptionally well. Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition!

When service and duty are first, great partnerships grow. We @utmbhealth are proud of and grateful for our work with the Texas State Prison System. Together with Bobby Lumpkin, Exec. Director of Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) and his team, we discussed how Health Care for the Prison System in the State of Texas can be further optimized for the benefit of all people.

I have had the opportunity to work closely with Dr. Kristen Starnes-Ott and have seen firsthand the thoughtfulness and experience she brings to her leadership of the UTMB School of Nursing.
Kristen understands that preparing the next generation of nurses means supporting students, strengthening mentorship and equipping nurses for an evolving health care environment.
What has impressed me most is the intentionality she brings to this work. The programs and strategies she is advancing today will strengthen the @utmbson and the nursing workforce for years to come.

Humanity learned to produce food in abundance, yet abundance itself contributed to obesity and metabolic disease.
AI presents a similar challenge. We are having an abundance of medical information, diagnostic possibilities, treatment recommendations, and machine-generated decisions.
But more information does not automatically mean better health. More recommendations do not necessarily mean better care. And greater efficiency does not guarantee greater humanity.
The challenge will be to transform an abundance of intelligence into an abundance of well-being.
Our vision is clear: to build a fully AI-enabled health system that brings out the best in our providers, students, researchers, and most importantly our patients.
Congratulations 🇺🇸 🇩🇪 🇩🇪
Deisseroth, Hegemann & Nagel discovered how light-gated ion channels enable precise control of cells which created the field of optogenetics.
💡 Light → ion channel → cell control
This revolutionized neuroscience, allowing scientists to switch specific neurons on/off and opening new possibilities for treating neurological disease.
A landmark transition from observing biology to controlling it.
BREAKING NEWS
The 2026 #NobelPrize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel “for their discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics.”
135 years @utmbhealth is not simply a history to celebrate.
It is a responsibility to build the next 135 years.
Something never changes …. And that is the warm feeling about @utmbhealth.
In my dinner with @memorialhermann President Dr. David Callender, we talked amongst other things also about his time from 2007 to 2019 when he was at the helm of UTMB.
