OPINION | Is skipping a genocide memorial for a marula festival a snub, or political genius? While some critics slam president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, she’s playing 3D chess to secure the future of the ruling party, Swapo.

If Jemima's question is quoted correctly, then it is no allegation. It asks what the President has to say about concerns expressed. Such inquiries are the job of media practitioners in a democracy proudly declaring media freedom nogal. They are at times a nuisance - rightly so.

Our press freedom was hard-won and globally respected. Bullying a journalist for doing their job erodes that legacy and stains our leadership. This behaviour is un-Namibian.
KICKED OUT OF STATE HOUSE … Journalist and The Whistle Namibia founder Jemima Beukes was escorted out of State House in Windhoek on Monday morning after she asked president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah a question. Beukes was attending the opening of Cabinet. The journalist says on her official social media that she asked the president whether she could pose a question. “She said no. I asked it anyway. The question was: 'There are concerns that your family is moving into controlling the country's oil industry.' Immediately after, I was escorted away. A phone belonging to a colleague, which I had used to record the officers manhandling me, was confiscated. I was escorted out of state house. Officers took photos of my car and threatened me with arrest for asking a question after the president had said no,” Beukes says. The president had said questions should be directed the the Cabinet secretary.
