When people wonder why we can’t have a greater Birmingham rather than a “West midlands urban area”, or when urban economists scratch their heads over local parochialism, I think they should just read some history.

Chance Brothers made all the glass for the Crystal Palace
#CityOf1000Trades Chance Brothers glassworks were based in Smethwick but members of the family owned factories in Birmingham. This plate for a staircase window is in a 1867 catalogue. Ref – Birmingham trade catalogue collection @LibraryofBham @sandwelllibs @SandwellArchive

It would be much better if we just called pentagons and hexagons fivecorners and sixcorners like the Germans. Why should maths or science be a Greek lesson in disguise?

This of course has nothing to do with Birmingham’s recent productivity struggles.
The decline of the British car industry came in two Brexit stages. 1. Uncertainty post-referendum weakened the industry 2. Trade arrangements that replaced EU membership did lasting damage. ukandeu.ac.uk/from-pace-sett…

I see jackdaw is managing to have no impact on anything while simultaneously contributing hugely to the climate crisis.

I wish people would stop talking so much about growf. What this country needs is a reassertion of the “th” sound.

Placeless car-dominated sprawl. Fails to adequately address the street or take advantage of the opportunities presented by its canalside location. Not dense enough, too much road and too much parking given that the occupants are the least likely demographic to own them. Object.

The average Brummie was a relatively skilled Anglican, wouldn’t go near a trade union, voted liberal unionist and worked for a small artisan or engineering business, maybe hoping one day to become a “master” himself. No other UK conurbation has such strongly diverging histories

My old copy of “music for the jilted generation” was being played last night. The insert is an interesting artefact

I was just trying to tell my daughters what the nineties were really like. Seeing Suede in their early days supporting Kingmaker at the Birmingham Institute in 1992. Vile homophobic abuse screamed at Brett Anderson for the entire gig. Wasn’t just Brum, happened at every date

Of all the Americanisms that have entered our language and I’ve hated over my lifetime, and there are many, the recent adoption of “Anglo” is a particular low point
