Placeless car-dominated sprawl. Fails to adequately address the street or take advantage of the opportunities presented by its canalside location. Not dense enough, too much road and too much parking given that the occupants are the least likely demographic to own them. Object.

We are really fucked. • AI has become dangerous (not because it is brilliant but because it has poor judgement, a constitutional inability to reliably follow rules, a surfeit of brute force and too much access to the internet and system permissions). • OpenAI is practically on crime spree, hinting at things to come, and Trump is doing nothing about it. • The media is too caught up in fairytales about extinction. Everybody is talking; nobody is really doing anything. And it’s only going to get worse.

Another example of same. Aspects of the Birmingham UK landscape offer a real feeling of mystery and romance. And then there's the Blair-era "Cool Britannia" shoppingslop--which has aged even worse than modernist stuff from the 60s.
Northern English cities (e.g. Newcastle) look so intriguing, except for the Blair-era "Cool Britannia" slop they built in the 1990s, which has aged like milk

When artisans began reviving old cheese recipes in the 1980s, they were, in effect, reinventing the wheel. They have done so with gusto economist.com/britain/2026/0…

Worth celebrating, unless apparently you’re the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and *Sport*, or indeed the Prime Minister, because unless it’s in Manchester they don’t give a shit. Growth in every postcode but some postcodes more than others.
For the first time ever, Britain is hosting the European Athletics Championships - right here in Birmingham. Europe’s best have arrived and we’re underway at the Alexander Stadium and the West Midlands is taking centre stage. Good luck to Matthew Hudson-Smith, @jake_minsh and all our homegrown talent. We’re behind you. 💪

🇪🇸 A curious coincidence from this World Cup: every team Spain has faced was, at some point in history, part of the same political entity as Spain. 🇨🇻 Cape Verde — Iberian Union 🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia — Umayyad Caliphate 🇺🇾 Uruguay — Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata 🇦🇹 Austria — Habsburg Monarchy 🇵🇹 Portugal — Iberian Union 🇧🇪 Belgium — Habsburg Monarchy 🇫🇷 France — Napoleonic Empire 🇦🇷 Argentina — Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata

The Ikon Gallery is among Birmingham's finest buildings. But this landmark was not originally a civic icon. It was, in fact, originally Oozells Street Board School, and its history is a testament to the city’s decisive role in fighting for free universal education.

I suspect it’s the only place the overwhelming majority of the UK would resent being governed from more than London.
FT exclusive: Andy Burnham is looking to set up a 'Number 10 in the north', moving part of his prime ministerial operation to Manchester, in a radical attempt to shift power beyond Westminster ft.trib.al/RfP4Mfr

I'm always astonished by how wooded parts of Kent, Surrey and Sussex remain. In summer months, you look out from the high points to see a seeming forest spread at your feet.

So 38 Calthorpe Rd in leafy Edgbaston is where armageddon started. I knew about Frisch-Peierls memo but not that they shared this house (now medical centre) or that Klaus Fuchs was the lodger. Their breakthrough was realising you'd only need a few pounds of U235 to make a weapon
