Covered the Indianapolis Colts for five years at @StampedeBlue. Now I just tweet.

I tweet a lot about Peyton Manning. It's probably easy to miss some of the tweets and threads, so I've compiled a number of them into one thread here for convenience:

Had DeForest Buckner signed this off-season with another team, the highest compensatory draft pick that the Colts could have gotten was a 5th being that he is an 11-year NFL veteran. Rather than getting a 2028 5th, the Colts opted today for the 2027 4th.
Trade: Colts are sending three-time Pro-Bowl DT DeForest Buckner back to the 49ers, the team that made him a 2016 first-round pick before dealing him to Indianapolis in 2020, per me and @rapsheet. Now Buckner returns to San Francisco, fortifying the 49ers defensive line.

Those of us that had to watch Peyton Manning, Dallas Clark, Jeff Saturday, and Gary Brackett cut in the same week are built for this🫡
If you’re not ready for the rough waters of a serious rebuild, now is the time to jump ship. This shit ain’t for the weak!! #Colts #RebuildTheShoe

When Colts drafted Quenton Nelson they had a 28 year old Andrew Luck, entering one of his best seasons. Drafting a Hall of Fame guard is GREAT, especially when you have a franchise QB. Plenty of issues with Chris Ballard’s decision-making. Drafting Nelson isn’t one of them.

As a general rule, any time you draft a Hall of Fame player, that’s a good pick! That’s especially the case when you already have a franchise QB. The problem is that, once said QB was gone, Ballard couldn’t hit on the most important areas.

I think telling fans that you’re committed to a legitimate rebuild rather than trying to put band aids on a mediocre team is going to resonate more with fans than them fighting hard for another 7-9 win season into perpetuity.
10 games to go - YOU play in the AFC South??? What type of message is this sending to the team and your fanbase for the next 10 weeks? 🤯 @WISHNews8 I @wrtv I #firesale

Agreed. Tough to lose two franchise pillars within hours, but they’re not tearing down The Good Ole Days here. Nelson was here for one playoff win. Buckner for one appearance. Ring of Honor individuals but can count the actual memories their teams produced on one hand.
I know that this is a very emotional day for many Colts’ fans, but this should also be the most hopeful you’ve been about the franchise’s long-term success in several years. They have been in QB + GM purgatory for a decade, constantly mortgaging the future for mediocre results.

This is why the compensatory pick talk misses the mark. Colts are very likely going to spend a good amount next offseason.
The Colts are going to sign so many free agents this next cycle lol. They are going to have upwards of 130 million in cap space once they cut Daniel Jones

Quenton Nelson is the best player I’ve ever covered and probably the best player to wear a Colts uniform since Peyton Manning. All time great, easy Hall of Famer, and one of the best pure run blockers we’ve ever seen at the position

Reunion! The Colts are trading three-time Pro Bowl DL DeForest Buckner to the 49ers for a 2027 fourth-round pick, sources tell @ringer @netflixsports. Buckner came to San Francisco as the No. 7 overall pick in the 2016. A decade later, he’s back.

This is important context for those who think the Colts sold low on Nelson. Guards in general - much less on a contract year! - don't generate much trade value. It's hard to see him go. But the value of the trade is perfectly fine.
Based on what I can find, Quenton Nelson received the largest trade compensation for any veteran Guard who was on their 2nd+ contract in the history of the NFL. The next closest would likely be Logan Mankins for a 4th round pick + TE Tim Wright.

Quenton Nelson is a future Hall of Famer. Colts fans should celebrate him. A 3rd + 5th is good value for a guard on a contract year. Not going to find much better than that. But that highlights Ballard's failings: he could get great players at positions of lesser impact.

The only player to be named 1st-team All-Pro more times as a member of the Indianapolis Colts than Quenton Nelson? Peyton Manning. Peyton Manning - 5x Marvin Harrison - 3x Dwight Freeney - 3x Quenton Nelson - 3x

Fans don’t get to yell “FIRE SALE!” and then complain about the returns. Colts are trading from a position of weakness, with a deadline approaching. You accrue as many assets as you can, and prepare for a rebuild.

Trade: Colts have agreed to send eight-time Pro-Bowl guard Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks, per me and @rapsheet. Nelson is on an expiring contract and the Colts are opting to get back draft capital now before they could lose him in free agency. But an all-time Colt now moves on to the Seahawks.

That’s an atrocious flag against the Packers. NFL officiating is as bad as Big 12 officiating. What a mess.

Interesting @NDFootball 2026 Schedule Update!! As of the current @AP poll, ND has 4 teams on its schedule ranked in the Top 25: Miami (1), BYU (8), SMU (19), and Wisconsin (25). Just in the top 10, that is the same number of ranked teams as: @GeorgiaFootball @AlabamaFTBL Just in the top 10, that is MORE than: @CanesFootball (1) @OhioStateFB (3) @IUHoosiers (2) @Utah_Football (3) @UCLAFootball (1) @BYUfootball (2) Only @UKFootball has more than the Irish (5). Perhaps the talking heads at @ESPN or on @CollegeGameDay can stop with their season-long narrative that ND doesn’t play anyone. Zero facts to support that contention, just 100% bias designed to relegate the Irish to a “2 game season”…when it clearly is not! @ChildersRadio @GregMcElroy @NDFootballPR @bruce_straughan
