Lancashire was accepted as a county only when a royal exchequer official, in the audit for 1181-2, wrote out a separate parchment under the heading Lancastra quia non erat ei locus in Northumberland: ‘Lancaster, because there is no place for it in Northumberland.’

The Whitby Bookshop 📚
Tucked along Church Street, just below the 199 steps, this family run independent bookshop has been going since 1985.
Inside, a curving staircase leads up to more shelves and an arched doorway opens into the children's area.
Around 10,000 titles are on the shelves, with a good Gothic section for anyone who came to Whitby for Dracula.
