⚖️ “Politicians shouldn’t get to choose their own voters.”⚖️ Yesterday the Alberta government released its new electoral boundaries map. The process that produced it has been deeply flawed from the start. An independent Electoral Boundaries Commission spent more than a year holding public hearings and reviewing submissions from Albertans. Its majority report reflected that input and proposed an 89-seat map focused on effective representation. The government rejected those recommendations, discarded the independent commission’s work, and created a new process that produced the 91-seat map released yesterday. Independent commissions exist precisely to prevent this outcome. Section 3 of the Canadian Charter protects the right to effective representation — not partisan map-making that dilutes urban votes by creating more hybrid ridings. One commissioner’s preference for additional seats does not override the independent process or the public consultation that preceded it. If the government believed its approach was lawful and consistent with the Charter, it could have defended that position in court. Instead, it bypassed the independent commission’s majority report. Now Albertans are left to take the government to court to restore a fair process.
