Shame is a spur that can get you off the mark, but it can't take you across the line. You can't flog yourself into fitness anymore than you can swim upstream in a river of Jell-O or drain a pool with a soda straw. Self-compassion is the key.

Cholesterol cutoffs keep getting more aggressive. What used to be “desirable” under 200 is now treated like a crisis. Doctors push statins on millions of people the moment they hit or go over 200 total cholesterol. Meanwhile, cardiologist Dr. Aseem Malhotra: “There was a dogma that saturated fat causes heart disease. It’s complete bullshit.” He reviewed the data: no relationship. If saturated fat doesn’t cause heart disease, cholesterol isn’t that important a risk factor for most people (only extreme cases). More people than ever are being put on these drugs while the evidence for benefit in low-risk people remains tiny. The numbers keep climbing. The science doesn’t back the panic.

I had a wonderful time last night sharing with goldcare and @dramerling and many others what I've learned about the science of CVD that is not covered by conventional lipidology and cardiology. One topic I covered is the unsubstantiated view that LDL particles force their way into the endothelium leading to plaque formation. This perspective disregards the protective effect of the glycocalyx, which lines the lumen side of the endothelium. The endothelium and LDL are both negatively charged, which means that LDL is repelled electrostatically from approaching the endothelium. For this reason, a metabolically healthy person, such as an #LMHR, need not be concerned about having very high LDL-C. @DoctorTro @lowcarbGP @davidludwigmd @realDaveFeldman @KenDBerryMD @nicknorwitz @AdrianSotoMota @drsimonegold @zoeharcombe @ifixhearts @DiljanMansoor @lowcarbusa @LowCarbBeast @Fynnderella1

Every ultra-processed snack is engineered by food scientists with one job: make it impossible to stop eating. Not satisfying. Not nourishing. ➡️ Addictive ⬅️ That's not an accident of food processing. That's the entire business model. You're not lacking willpower. You're outgunned.

Acne isn't only a skin problem, and in many young men it's a metabolic one. When young men with acne were compared with men of the same age without it, the acne group had higher fasting insulin, higher insulin two hours after a glucose drink, and more insulin resistance. Even among the lean men, insulin after the glucose drink independently predicted acne. Insulin pushes skin cells to grow and divide, so lowering insulin is a reasonable target alongside whatever goes on the skin.

The NHS has an official page on ultra-processed food. It warns that ultra-processed food has been linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Ok. Then, a few lines later, it tells you which ultra-processed foods are fine to eat. These are the ones it lists: - Wholemeal sliced bread - Wholegrain or higher fibre breakfast cereals -Baked beans The exact words are "Some ultra-processed foods can be included in a healthy diet." So the factory loaf with emulsifiers and preservatives gets a free pass. The box of cereal gets a free pass. The tin of beans in sugary sauce gets a free pass. And what does the same page warn you about? Processed and red meat. The cereal is fine. The meat is the problem. It even admits, in its own words, that "It's not known if ultra-processed foods are unhealthy due to the processing." They don't know, but they're sure your cornflakes are OK. Funny how the foods that get the nod all come from the grain industry, isn't it. If you want to know what your breakfast is really doing to you, get a fasting insulin and an HbA1c done after a few months of "higher fibre cereal." Then try steak and eggs and test again. Cereal or eggs? Which one is the real health food?

🥩🌴 FINALLY, a retreat that isn't strictly vegan! If you follow a keto, carnivore, or meat-based lifestyle, finding a retreat that aligns with the way you eat can be a challenge. Here's a refreshing alternative! The Meat & Movement Retreat in Costa Rica combines meat-centered nourishment, movement, nature, and restoration in a beautiful jungle setting. 🌿 Jungle walks & waterfalls 🧘 Yoga, breathwork & meditation ♨️ Hot springs & cold plunges 🥩 Meat & movement 🌊 Beach time & relaxation As someone who follows keto for serious mental health reasons, I love seeing alternatives to the usual vegan retreat model. Costa Rica, anyone? 🌴 👉 Check out The Meat & Movement Retreat: thelightwell.health/meatandm… #Carnivore #Keto #MeatAndMovement #CostaRicaRetreat

It pains me to say this given I am a clinical psychologist. Yet I firmly believe the greatest predictor of a lifelong struggle w/ mental illness- other than untreated trauma- is entering into the mental health system as currently constructed.

My doctor wants to lower my cholesterol. Cool. Lower it to what exactly? Cholesterol is what your body uses to make your hormones, repair your cells and keep your brain working. Your liver makes most of it because you'd die without it. But sure, let's pop a pill and turn the factory off. It's like your car's oil light coming on and you deciding the oil is the problem. So you drain it, and you're amazed when the engine seizes. Nobody ever asks the useful questions. What's your fasting insulin? What's your triglyceride to HDL ratio? What's your HbA1c? Those tell you far more about your metabolic health than a total cholesterol number ever will. But they're not attached to a multi-billion pound drug. I'm not scared of cholesterol. I'm scared of lazy thinking. Has a doctor ever tried to put you on a statin without checking anything else?

Losing fat doesn't have to mean losing muscle, and protein is a big part of that. In young men eating about 40% fewer calories than they needed for four weeks while training hard, the group eating twice as much protein gained lean mass and lost more fat than the group eating less. When calories are cut, the body is more willing to break down muscle protein, and more dietary protein offsets that. Anyone cutting calories should push protein up and keep lifting the whole way through.

Lawmakers in at least 32 states have introduced legislation to limit or eliminate ultra-processed foods in school meals. UPFs are typically characterized by profitability, convenience and use of ingredients never found in a supermarket. wapo.st/4yLIfrA

Researchers gave office workers who lived under LEDs a 60W incandescent desk lamp. Two weeks later, every one of them had their color vision improve by 25%. In 2022, the government banned those bulbs for "wasting" energy. But that "waste" is actually one of the most important nutrients our bodies depend upon, and the improvement lasted for weeks after the lamps were taken away (while nothing changed in the controls). Decades of forgotten research show the artificial light we replaced it with is a root cause of many inexplicable illnesses (e.g., insomnia, obesity, cancer, and hyperactivity in children). Here I show what that research found and why Senator Mike Lee’s bill to bring these bulbs back, which has now cleared a Senate committee, matters.🧵 midwesterndoctor.com/p/the-h…

The devastating diagnostic labelling in psychiatry: When a friend of mine was admitted to hospital in her twenties with acute psychosis, the psychiatrist said: “You are schizophrenic!” She felt she stopped existing as a person, with autonomy and dignity. She was a bag of symptoms they took control over - no longer someone that her carers needed to respect - and the following years were devastating for her. As a psychologist, she now helps people come off psychiatric drugs and heals many psychoses with psychotherapy.

Ever tried to stop an antidepressant such as an SSRI or SNRI (or other psychiatric drug) and found reductions harder as you approach zero? For example, you’re tapering Effexor and found little difference when you reduced it from 225mg to 150mg. But later, you tried to drop from 75mg to 37.5mg and felt worse (and in different ways) than before you started the Effexor? You’re not imagining it. Brain imaging studies show that the effect of these drugs on the brain is not linear — it’s hyperbolic. At higher doses, much of the drug’s effect is already in place, so a larger reduction may change relatively little. But much smaller doses have a substantial effect, which means even modest cuts can have a dramatically larger impact on the brain as you get closer to zero. That’s where hyperbolic tapering can help reduce the risk of withdrawal: as your overall dose gets progressively smaller, the amount you cut each time gets progressively smaller as well. Our founder Laura Delano (@LauraDelano) touches on this in her recent conversation with Blake Mycoskie (@BlakeMycoskie) on No Magic Pill. See link below to watch the full episode.

It’s a fee-free entrance day for U.S. citizens and residents at Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks! Today we celebrate Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States, who left a lasting mark on America’s public lands. During his presidency, he established five national parks, designated 18 national monuments, created 51 federal bird reservations, and protected about 230 million acres of public land for future generations. In 1901, a giant sequoia tree was named after Theodore Roosevelt by acting Sequoia National Park Superintendent Capt. Lincoln Andrews. In his report to the Secretary of the Interior, Andrews wrote, “Between the road and Moro Rock stands a lone Sequoia, considered the most perfect specimen, though not so large, which I have named for His Excellency Theodore Roosevelt, President of the United States.” NPS/H. Just interviewed a 44 year old US army veteran medically retired from a traumatic brain injury with PTSD and numerous orthopedic traumatic injuries from a Humvee accident and another IED blast injury. On 14 or 15 medications from the VA doctors - narcotics, anti-depressants, anti-anxiety meds and meds for the side effects from the other meds- swelled up to 330 lbs Went keto and the carnivore in his own when a buddy told him about it a few years ago, got of all meds but 1, lost 80 lbs and doubled his level of function - his doctors don’t support what he is eating (meat, eggs etc..) but like the results Once again, another example of the medical system trapped by the pharma dogma failing their patient, but fortunately good nutrition was able to bring him back!

This should change what we hand sick people. A new Nature study tracked 9,419 hospital meals eaten by 173 stem cell transplant patients. For every 100 grams of sweets eaten while on broad-spectrum antibiotics, gut bacterial diversity dropped an extra 24%. Sugar during antibiotics also went with blooms of Enterococcus, a gut bug that can be drug-resistant and cause hard-to-treat infections. In mice, adding table sugar made that bloom bigger and last longer. And sweets were the only food group these patients didn't cut back on as treatment got rough. Think about how much juice, Jell-O, and popsicles we hand people on antibiotics. I've talked about sugar and the gut for years (see below). We surely need to rethink the sick tray, right? Study and my videos below... – at Tennessee, USA
