UPZONING ALONE WON'T FIX THE HOUSING CRISIS; WE NEED TO HAVE A LAND VALUE TAX BECAUSE UPZONING GENERATES WINDFALL GAINS FOR LAND BANKERS. LVT WILL CAPTURE THIS VALUE FOR EVERYONE'S BENEFIT, ENSURES THAT UPZONING BOOSTS SUPPLY, AND INCENTIVIZES EFFICIENT MUNICIPAL GOVERNANCE.

The first land owners were thieves of the highest order. And they've been scamming the rest of humanity ever since. In predictable ~80 year cycles, capital crushes labor every time and economies crash.
Only land value tax funded universal basic income stops this vicious cycle.

There's a alternate timeline where YIMBYism comes up in the antitrust era and socialists support broader upzoning to erase the influence and land banks of big developers
Friendly reminder that not understanding this accounting identity can damage one's understanding of whether a land value tax can be passed on.

every “leftist” telling you not to vote is a Russian asset.
every “leftist” who says building apartments is colonialism is a landlord psy op.
pass it on.
What libertarians don't understand is that since Georgists reject homesteading as a legitimate way to bring land into allodial ownership, any current land property arrangements cannot be said to be valid sans LVT, and thus land value tax cannot be theft of legitimate property.

High ticket prices function effectively as a land value tax for concerts. And people can't shut up about it.

Meanwhile, one of the most harmful policy movements in America right now is a property tax revolt that is shifting us away from our most economically efficient tax, all so property owners can have a little more in their pockets next month.

"The Electoral College makes it so California and New York don't decide elections" is just one step removed from "California and New York residents should not get to vote" because it fundamentally rejects the idea that certain voters get as much right to win as others.
Anyone who would call themselves "left-YIMBYs" are fully supportive of a land value tax, which is a complete socialization of land rent, so no, left-YIMBYs are not housing Reaganites.
Also, social housing does nothing to advance the sharing of land rents unless rents are set at market rates, which left-NIMBYs are vehemently against as a matter of principle, so I assume most of it benefits a random subset of the population at the expense of broader society.

Sure but also social housing's track record doesn't move me. Even in places where it works there seems to be insane wait time that could take many years. Having more private development seems to be the best way to build at scale. Alongside giving housing vouchers to those who can't afford a home.

Ballpark estimates for Vancouver over 30 years:
- provincial income tax: $50B
- 100% land value tax: $130B
We could stop taxing income, start taxing location rents (instead of giving them to homeowners as a windfall gain), and still have $80B left over.
