The entire Financial Times editorial board has published a piece urging Lula to cut government spending and appoint a finance minister who enjoys the confidence of investors.
I get the impression that the FT editorial board has never opened an economics book other than some outdated introductory macroeconomics textbook, perhaps something by Mankiw. Otherwise, it's hard to explain such astonishing arrogance and economic ignorance.
Lula and the Brazilian people have absolutely no reason to bow to the demands of financial markets. Brazil is Latin America's largest economy, a major regional power, and a country with a high degree of monetary sovereignty. Around 97% of the central government's debt is denominated in its own currency, the Brazilian real.
The relationship between the state and financial markets is therefore nothing like the FT portrays it. Brazil is not dependent on financial markets. On the contrary, financial markets depend on government spending, which creates financial assets for the private sector, while government debt denominated in the national currency is one of the instruments through which those assets are held.
What Brazil needs is not capitulation to financial markets, but an independent economic policy focused on expanding production, creating jobs, and improving people's living standards.
Armed with the insights of heterodox economic theory, Brazil has the potential to show the world what a genuine economic miracle looks like. ft.com/content/79785581-88c2…

💬 @_mkonieczny w @Radio_TOK_FM:
‼️ Doceniając pojedyncze korekty, potrzebujemy całościowej reformy i jednolitej daniny.

Brazil has accumulated a substantial stock of foreign investment over the decades. Even with a trade surplus, these assets generate income for non-residents.
But it is important to understand that a primary income deficit does not necessarily translate into an equivalent actual outflow of foreign currency.
Under the BPM6 methodology, reinvested earnings are recorded simultaneously as a debit in the primary income account and as a corresponding transaction in the direct investment component of the financial account.
If Brazil runs a trade surplus, a significant portion of which is offset by a negative balance of income accruing to foreign capital, a legitimate question arises: how sensible is it to base a long-term economic development strategy primarily on attracting foreign capital rather than developing the country’s own productive capacity?
Incidentally, due to political prejudices, Russia’s unique economic experiment in 2022 remains remarkably underappreciated — essentially a large-scale beta test of the possibilities afforded by monetary sovereignty.
Russia imposed strict capital controls while maintaining a floating exchange rate. And its financial system did not collapse, despite unprecedented sanctions and the freezing of a substantial portion of its international reserves.
Of course, the record current account surplus and the sharp contraction in imports played an enormous role. But that is precisely why Russia’s experience is of exceptional interest to post-Keynesian macroeconomics: it demonstrated just how profoundly a sovereign state can reshape the conditions under which financial markets operate by using the instruments of monetary sovereignty.

Retrospectives on events in Eastern Europe during 1956 usually focus on the Soviet invasion of Hungary.
But the story of Poland’s reform movement, from its initial success to its long-term failure to transform the communist system, was equally important: jacobin.com/2026/10/poland-s…

Pozdrawiam

The events of October 1956 in Poland marked the moment when Polish socialism found its own voice, resonating with broad layers of society.
However, that moment proved short-lived, as Poland’s new leaders squandered the opportunity to reform the system. jacobin.com/2026/10/poland-s…

How the brain governs feelings, behaviours and bodily functions has long been a mystery.
This year’s medicine laureates, Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel, pioneered the field of optogenetics, which makes it possible to switch on, or off, the activity of individual nerve cells in a living brain.
Using optogenetics, researchers have been able to reveal neural circuits governing specific memories, feelings and behaviours relevant for neurological and psychiatric disorders. In clinical medicine, researchers are using the method in attempts to restore sight in people with visual impairment.
