Why is Martin Lewis being told things before the house of commons?
CONFIRMED. Gas Standing Charges to be scrapped. I've just come out of a meeting with the Chancellor. The gas standing charge will be scrapped in 2027 (my guess, either for 1 Oct price cap or the 1 Jan 28 price cap). Having campaigned against the moral hazard of standing charges for years, I'm pleased.
It's currently £108 a year. That cost will be shifted onto unit rates. We don't know how much yet, but I suspect just under 1p per kwH.
The Chancellor also said he will be talking to Ofgem about how they get rid of the charge on electricity as well, but that is 'trickier' apparently and will take longer.
This is primarily about the price cap standing charges. There will still be an open market, so other firms can offer other forms of prices with or without the standing charge. My suspicion is that once it goes on the price cap, it will tend to be reduced on other tariffs as well.
As for those on fixes: if you get a fix now, the rate of your fix is fixed, so this should not affect it. You will pay what you pay and if it has standing charges they will continue (some asking if they should delay fixing because of this, no if a fix is right for you and will save you money, don't let this change that - this is about the structure of bills, as opposed to the actual costs on bills).
About 60% of people will pay less due to this, 40% more. My guesstimate is the dividing line will be somewhere around 12,500 kilowatt hours of gas (can't know until there is actual pricing). According to a study by Nesta, this switch would leave the majority of people in all income groups under £100,000 better off.
Of course, when this does come in, if we're still in the nightmare that we are right now, there will need to be support put in for vulnerable higher users, who will have to pay more. Though hopefully by then the mid-east will have calmed and energy prices lower.
---------------
That's all long term. The biggest issue in energy right now is that we're expecting a 27% rise in the price cap in January. I asked the Chancellor whether he will be intervening on that. He told me I'd have to wait for the budget, but reading between the lines, yes, there will be an announcement today.
Whether it's an increase in the Warm Home Discount, or whether it's council tax banned, or whether it's done via a payout for people in say council tax bands A-D as a proxy for household income as Rishi Sunak did who knows.

It’s not going to be freezing cold in early November but Europe away from far north and southwest actually going forward looks to see stubborn colder than average anomalies.
A large departure from much of year. Slack areas of high pressure = low wind. Our renewable heavy electrical grind will feel the pinch.

🇨🇳 🇩🇪 🚗 VW finally chasing proper software and a usable UI? About time.
💻Volkswagen is reportedly looking at using software architecture co-developed with Chinese EV maker XPeng across a big chunk of its future VW, Škoda and Cupra line-up.
And frankly, it could do with it. the infotainment and user experience in some VW Group cars have lagged a long way behind the best of the competition.
If Chinese-developed software helps put that right, why wouldn’t they use it?
The EV race isn’t just about batteries, range and charging speeds. The software matters too. ⚡

I can’t believe the abuse I’ve received for posting this.
In a supermarket this morning.
Toilet roll shelves looking depleted, almost everyone in the long queues to pay was buying bottled water.
Absolutely packed.
@wesstreeting has a lot to answer for, scaremongering like this.

Reform gets its 4th leader of Staffordshire in 16 months:
Following careful consideration, I have concluded that it is in the best interests of Staffordshire, our residents and this County Council for me to step down as Leader of Staffordshire County Council and Leader of the Reform UK Group.
This was a difficult decision, but the interests of Staffordshire, the Council and those we serve must come first.
I do so with a clear conscience and immense pride in what we achieved together. During my time as Leader, we delivered a balanced budget, protected frontline services, secured significant investment in highways, children's services and community facilities, and provided stability through one of the most challenging periods in the County Council's recent history.
I am particularly proud of the work undertaken to strengthen Staffordshire's identity, confidence and economic ambition. Through supporting investment, promoting county pride, strengthening skills and employment opportunities, and backing our tourism and leisure sectors, I sought to help unlock Staffordshire's potential and create opportunities for future generations. Whether supporting major investment, protecting Staffordshire County Farms or advocating for local businesses on the national stage, my focus was always on ensuring Staffordshire remained a county where businesses could invest, communities could thrive and residents could succeed.
Staffordshire is home to some of our country's most successful global businesses and institutions, including JCB, Indurent, JLR, Finning, Keele University and Keele University Science and Innovation Park, alongside thousands of small businesses, from farm shops to engineering firms, from global manufacturers to hospitality venues and family-run enterprises. They are a reminder that Staffordshire remains one of the great manufacturing heartlands of Great Britain and a county with enormous potential for the future.
I am equally proud of the work I started to raise the profile of Staffordshire's tourism, leisure and hospitality sectors. With the likes of Alton Towers, Drayton Manor, Trentham Estate and Cannock Chase, together with the thousands of hotels, spas, glamping sites, restaurants, event venues and award-winning pubs that welcome visitors every year, Staffordshire has an offer few counties can rival. I have long believed that our county should be recognised not only as a centre of industry and innovation, but also as a destination where people come to relax, explore and create lasting memories. That is why we branded Staffordshire as The Nation's Playground.
I have always believed Staffordshire deserved a stronger voice and greater recognition, and that's why I called Staffordshire: The Beating Heart of the Country.
It has been a privilege to serve the people of Staffordshire and to work alongside dedicated councillors, officers, businesses, community organisations and residents. While my time as Leader has come to an end, my commitment to Staffordshire and the people of Cannock remains unchanged.
I do wish the Council and its new leadership every success in the years ahead.

The Leader of Staffordshire County Council has resigned - again.
This is becoming a joke now.
No wonder our town has become a car park - rather than common sense leadership, all we get is chaos and division.
We deserve - and pay for - much better than this.

On Good Morning Britain, Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley challenged Andy Burnham after the government told people to stockpile food and water, Susana: “You’ve just spooked everybody by saying stockpile… We have the current Defence Secretary saying we need to prepare for war.”
Richard then asked whether Burnham was disappointed that some of his own colleagues treated the stockpiling advice light-heartedly, referring to comments from figures such as Angela Rayner who joked about packing mascara and wine in a survival kit, essentially, “either you’re serious about it or you’re not.”
Burnham laughing away to himself, replied that he wasn’t bothered, because “a bit of humour makes the point.”
No. Telling the public to prepare for war or major disruption is fearmongering, and brushing off the anxiety it creates with a joke isn’t funny. He treats everything as a bit of a laugh because he seems more concerned with coming across as the ordinary, down-to-earth bloke than acting like a Prime Minister facing serious security questions. You’re in the job now, time to take it seriously

The police can FINE you up to £10,000 and 3 points on your license for having bald or minimum tread on your tyres if they find you driving an unroadworthy vehicle.
Shouldn’t the police be able to FINE local councils for unroadworthy roads with potholes..
As if living in the UK wasn’t depressing enough, we now have to adopt a nationwide bunker mentality. ☹️
