“While Goldman has voted reliably for pro-labor legislation, Region 9A’s endorsement of Lander suggests that a strong AFL-CIO scorecard alone may no longer be sufficient.” Full piece for @thenation here: thenation.com/article/politi…

I am coming up on a year as the Working Class Voices columnist for CUNY’s New Labor Forum! It’s been a great honor for workers to trust me with the stories of their life and work. NLF publishes fantastic stuff cover to cover and is run by the best

In the first columns, a glazier told me about the fulfillment of building as a union worker, a neuroscientist explained the contradictions that highly skilled and educated STEM workers face and, most recently, a video game engineer spoke about the threat of AI to the industry.

It was such an honor to do an American Socialist book event with Kim Phillips-Fein, one of the great historians working today!
There isn’t a better person than @shawngude to tell Eugene Debs’s story with a fresh pair of eyes. Shawn in conversation with Kim Phillips-Fein about “American Socialist: The Life and Legacy of Eugene V. Debs”

"The Blueprint is the clearest, most forceful, and most detailed case for market socialism that anyone has made for a generation, or more. It should be read, and debated, by all of us who want to build something better than capitalism, as well as the skeptics." – Cosma Shalizi on our book, which is officially out in an hour. Very happy to see my long piece on the ethics of labor under socialism in the new @catalyst_theory, in which I take on the question of how a socialist society might realistically, and justly, fulfill its labor needs. Read it here: catalyst-journal.com/2026/09…

"Come with me to the White House – see how I work” is seriously such a crazy line lol
👀👀👀👀 Here's what Trump said to Mamdani yesterday outside Gracie: “I’ll look after you, you look after the New Yorkers. And we can both make it work. I wanna support you, help me. Come with me to the White House – see how I work.” nypost.com/2026/09/22/us-new…

I don’t start reading until the second cliché
"You get at most one cliché per book." Jonathan Franzen doesn't finish most books people send him. He reads until the second cliché, then stops. "People send me a galley of a book that's coming out. I read along until I get to the second cliché, and I say, thank you." "They tell me this is not an attentive writer. Aren't you aware that that's a cliché? Didn't it occur to you to stop and take 20 minutes to find a better phrasing than that?" "You can also have borrowed feelings, borrowed ideas, borrowed situations. Sentiment can be clichéd, or unearned."
