The UCP seem to think that politicians get to pick the voters to stay in power. If Albertans come together we can show them that voters, in fact, pick the politicians.

These UCP “influencers” are so transparent. Check out this “if I had more time, I’d have written a shorter letter” rambling attempt at defending the indefensible. lol. Gerrymandering is cheating. Full stop.
All the Alberta NDP activists complaining about "gerrymandering" had nothing to say about Rachel Notley's Alberta NDP government consolidating rural ridings and creating 3 separate new urban ridings in Calgary and Edmonton. Although the AB NDP was so unpopular by 2019 the gerrymandering couldn't save them from being washed out by the UCP. The truth is what the UCP government is doing now is Un-gerrymandering the map so the Alberta NDP cannot win elections while losing the popular vote by a country mile. The proposed boundary changes the UCP threw out last year would have made it EVEN EASIER for the NDP to win elections by making the urban slant of Calgary ridings worse. The NDP is the party that can win elections while losing the popular vote by 8% and yet they are complaining about the UCP letting a judge better draw lines to not have a bunch of Calgary ridings all dog-leg into downtown to allow for the NDP to win while never trying to win votes outside of the urban core of Calgary and Edmonton. Calgary-Elbow after the last redistricting looks like someone broke someone's elbow in the way it carves up suburban areas and cures around MRU to try and absorb some urban downtown neighbourhoods. I'm running for Calgary-Currie's UCP nomination (shameless plug: wyattclaypool.com) and I never knew why the riding for some reason reaches downtown to Sunalta and Bankview yet Wildwood is not part of the riding but Sprucecliff is??? Not that my opinions on the map matter but I'm just pointing out the maps the Alberta NDP left us with are obviously designed to allow the NDP to win very tight victories by baking a bunch of downtown Calgary and Edmonton into several ridings to offset the popularity of the UCP province-wide. Last election the NDP only lost on seat count by a couple thousand votes across the tightest ridings in Calgary, and if they did get those extra votes they would have had a majority despite losing the popular vote by more than 8%. I don't believe in Proportional Representation based only on popular vote. We need a balance between overall popular vote and local support. If a party wins the popular vote by 2% but losses on seats that's fine since one party being hyper-popular in one region should not necessary decide the election if the other party is winning more local races across the province. BUT, obviously an 8-10% popular vote victory for one party in a 2 party system should logically always result in that party winning the most seats. The NDP is mad that the map is becoming more fair and will better balance popular will across the province with local choice. The NDP want to be able to ignore the majority of voters and sneak into office with tight victories in urban areas.

Let's call it what it is: When a governing party ignores the non-partisan process for electoral ridings to expedite a map that gives them a political advantage, it is political corruption - plain and simple.

Time to implement a proportional voting system for Alberta.

BC United/Liberals is a cautionary tale on electoral reform. After rejecting a 57.7% YES referendum for proportional representation in '05 via an arbitrary threshold, first-past-the-post vote-splitting led them to fold, leaving their voters with no voice instead of coexisting.

First-past-the-post encourages provincial meddling in opposition riding bike lanes to pander to swing seats over real traffic solutions. Proportional representation ends this: when every vote counts equally, governments can’t steamroll opposition seats without backlash.

Proportional Representation threatens the political establishment by weakening political monopoly and patronage politics. First Past the Post built a system where sharing democratic power is treated as losing it. Give us equal power, not entrenched party privilege.
We cannot have sustainable energy because it threatens the oil industry. We cannot have healthcare because it threatens insurance. We cannot have peace because it threatens the weapons industry. Capitalism built a system where doing the right thing is treated like bad business.

Quebec tried this, and the SCC made them go back to the independent commission’s map. We’d be burning taxpayer money asking the Supreme Court a question they just answered in Quebec v Lalande 2026.

This is a strong argument in favour of proportional representation, not rejigging electoral boundaries to make it easier for the ruling party to win (if you'd prefer not to call it gerrymandering).
Again: In 2023, the UCP won 53% to 44%. But had it been just 1% different (UCP 52% to NDP 45%), the NDP would have won. So under the current boundaries, the NDP can win with just 45% of the vote! This is because drawing ridings along municipal boundaries packs conservatives into fewer rural ridings and artificially makes the NDP more competitive in the cities. Removing an existing gerrymander is not gerrymandering. Now, if the UCP went far further, and made it so that the UCP would win even if they only got 45% while the NDP got 52%, then yes that absolutely would be gerrymandering. But that’s not what’s happening here.

Representation by population is best when all the votes matter. A proportional voting system with STV in Calgary and Edmonton and an equally proportional extra member system in the rest of Alberta will stop Gerrymandering.
Representation by population isn’t “gerrymandering,” you absolute numpty. It’s in fact the basis of our liberal democracy and the constitution.

Something I find interesting about this discourse is why the UCP just doesn't pass proportional representation since they are more than capable of forming majorities under it. And be very hard to call rigging by the ANDP due to other NDP branches being pro-PR.
In the 2023 election, the UCP won 53% to 44%. But had it been just 1% different (52% to 45%) the NDP would have been government. If anything, the current map is massively gerrymandered in favour of the NDP. Restoring balance is not the same as gerrymandering it the other way.

This is an argument in favour of proportional representation, not really a case for gerrymandering.

First-past-the-post lets party corruption slide as long as they hold 30–40% in key swing seats. Proportional representation changes the game: governments need broad majority support to govern, meaning corruption can trigger severe electoral punishment and force accountability.
Months after resigning from Premier Doug Ford’s cabinet over a hotel expenses scandal, Progressive Conservative MPP Stan Cho returned to Queen’s Park with a new title, a higher salary and scorn from opposition parties. globalnews.ca/news/12123084/… #onpoli

Alberta has divided regional representation. We should have a better voting system so the vast majority of voters are represented regionally regardless of how they voted.

Level the playing field? The UCP won 52.63% of the popular vote in the 2023 election but ended up with 56.32% of the seats. The NDP won 44.05% of the popular vote but ended up with 43.68% of the seats. If the playing field is currently unlevel, it is in the UCP’s favour.
Total garbage. @DonBraid is literally just regurgitating exactly what is NDP buddies are telling him. Would be nice if he represented both sides of an issue for once. One of the most respected court of appeal justices in Alberta history is chairing the boundary committee. It’s a lie to say that it’s the UCP. The maps aren’t even available yet (though clearly leaked to the NDP by someone). In addition, Judge Miller and half the NDP caucus complained that there should be 2 additional seats added to account for population growth. So that was done and left to the independent judge-led committee to figure out how to do it. I assume they have done so. Further, last election the NDP lost the popular vote by almost 10 percent and still almost ended up winning the most seats. So obviously they don’t want any change whatsoever that could level the playing field. How do you explain that Don? Did the NDP gerrymander the map last go around under Notley? Was the 2023 election undemocratic too? The UCP isn’t making that claim because it’s disrespectful of the people - including the judge - who did the hard work of determining those past boundaries. Your bias is so clear Don. It’s disturbing.

If you really want to talk about vote efficiency, the UCP needed an average of about 18,900 votes to win each seat they got. The NDP needed about 20,400. The idea the NDP has a more efficient vote in Alberta is a downright myth #ableg
“Stack the deck” = adjusting the map so they don’t need to win by more than 8% in the popular vote to get a majority in a 2 party system.

Manning’s gerrymandered super majority (when he replaced ranked ballot Rural-AV/Urban-STV with FPTP) was worse, but courts have ruled differently since the 1950s. Saskatchewan v Carter (1991) & Quebec v Lalande (2026) would support a challenge to a such partisan gerrymander.
Albertans don't get to see the new commissions maps for a few days, but Nenshi made it clear today that the Gerrymandering is real. #abpoli #ableg #cdnpoli
