Facts: The protests are being linked to Muslims largely because Donald Trump and far-right commentators are using them to reinforce their narratives about immigration, Islam, and cultural change. Much of this narrative comes from right-wing political messaging. On October 6, Donald Trump reportedly wrote: “What’s happening in France is nothing less than out of control mass migration. This isn’t about schools, this is about Islam wanting to take over a once great Country!” Muslims are not collectively responsible for isolated incidents of violence. A Palestinian flag does not prove that a protest is an Islamic movement, and blaming an entire community without evidence is unfair.
