Notably, an air quality study was released, revealing that Prince George's County has some of the poorest air quality in the region. We also reported that information. Data centers, based on the evidence, could make the air worse.
In 2023, The Journal reported that Virginia community members and environmentalists were concerned about the effects of data centers. "Many of these industrial generators burn diesel or natural gas, releasing pollutants that pose risks to human and environmental health."
Additionally, due to our fair reporting, we also quoted The Chesapeake Bay Journal's, an environmental news organization, article on the dangers of data centers: bayjournal.com/news/pollutio…
It even cited Prince George's County "incredible electricity rates" as a reason for data centers to come. As of now, the potentiality of high electricity rates are one of the reasons that residents don't want the data centers.
1. Lower operating costs
2. Stable Power Sources
3. Proximity to end users to labor force
4. Governmental assistance
5. Connectivity (sites within 2-mile radius of multiple fiber options)
Again, according to the document posted in the newsletter, the plan shares at least 5 reasons why it thought the county was ready for data centers. See reasons below.
Bills/ Legislation. It said the county was ready because: 1. Waiver of Maryland's 6 percent sales and Use Tax (Senate Bill 397) 2. 90 Day By Right Approvals For Shovel Ground ( County Bill 001-2021) 3. Authority To Waive County Personal Property Taxes ( County Bill 55-2020).
The Prince George's County Economic Development Corporation put together a fact sheet on why the county was ready for data centers. Then it listed four reasons, and it cited some economic bills that would aid in the package. contextnewsletter.substack.c…
At the top of 2025, we were paying attention to the county's ambition to become a tech hub. So, we used our newsletter to inform various communities in Prince George's County about the county's ambition to build data centers to generate revenue. #DataCenters

🧵Hi, I'm the @propublica reporter who's been tracking an unusual stat: U.S. citizens grabbed by immigration agents.
I did it because the government isn’t.
This is what I found.

ALT White words on a black background read: 50+ Immigration agents have the authority to detain whom they reasonably suspect are in the country illegally. We found more than 50 Americans who were held after agents questioned their citizenship. They were almost all Latino. ~130 Agents also can arrest citizens who allegedly interfered with or assaulted officers. We compiled cases of about 130 Americans, including a dozen elected officials, accused of assaulting or impeding officers. ~20 Among the citizens detained are nearly 20 children, including two with cancer.
