SIR PATRICK STEWART (1940-2026)
Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end. You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love.
We first met as ambitious young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago but we weren’t in the same productions. My first strong memory was a few years later, meeting him in the street in central London when he told me about an offer to take over a leading part in 'Star Trek'. “But Patrick think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to risk—getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?”. Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marvelled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes ('X-Men' of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in London’s West End and on Broadway.
America was his adopted home, where he met his adored Sunny who has cared for him through sickness and health, through thick and thin. But he never forsook his origins: and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire.
His farewell performance in 'Avengers: Doomsday' is yet to be seen.

"If you want something done right, do it yourself. Even your eulogy."
No one can deliver a better tribute to Patrick Stewart than Patrick Stewart himself.
Geordi La Forge actor LeVar Burton pays tribute to his “Star Trek” co-star Patrick Stewart:
“He was family. There is no other context in which to hold him that makes sense. I am lucky to have known and loved so many of the facets of a soul so rich in talent and generous of heart. Of all the Dames and Knights I’ve known he was deep down-the silliest.”

I always found it delightful whenever Patrick Stewart would reprise his role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in shows like Family Guy or Robot Chicken because it always sounds like he's having the time of his life parodying himself
Commander Will Riker actor Jonathan Frakes pays tribute to his “Star Trek” co-star Patrick Stewart:
“There’s no one on this planet that I have acted with or directed more often than my late great friend Patrick Stewart. He will be with me forever. May he rest in Peace.”

With the news of Patrick passing on I’m actually in tears, Star Trek The Next Generation was one of the first shows I loved as a kid, watching people command a starship, I was obsessed with the show, I had never seen anything about it, the adventures, the fun, the danger. It was one of the shows that I could tell you what the episode was within a few seconds of the opening. Seeing Picard go from someone who was stern and by the book change over the course of the series to someone who cared but still had authority and command
To seeing someone get taken by the Borg and changed, seeing Picard break down and cry with his brother showed who he was, Picard was a role model same as Patrick, seeing Patrick outside of Star Trek was always a fun thing, seeing who he was and his humour was fantastic.
I really wish I got to meet him, I wish I could have shook his hand and told him what Picard meant to me and how it shaped part of me.
I don’t normally get emotional when it comes to celeb deaths but man this one hit me hard like actually hard. Fuck man. When I was typing this up one phrase from Picard came to mind and I think it’s ones of his best ones
“It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life."
I don’t know why I thought of that one but I did
