I was in the process of doing separate post on downside. There is no player representation on what could be a 17-game season (equal to NFL) for teenagers. Not good. At all.

What are your thoughts on player health? How many games are they now talking about playing over the course of a season? I predict some serious load management is coming to college football during the regular season.

. @JayBilas argues that college sports is financially healthy and competitively strong—not chaotic—and that all the turmoil surrounding it stems largely from the NCAA’s own policies.

With another MLB lockout looming, I sat down with MLBPA Executive Director Bruce Meyer on @SportsLawPod for an inside look at the labor battle from the players’ perspective. We discuss the owners’ push for a salary cap, the players’ opposition, competitive balance, player solidarity, and what’s at stake for the 2027 season.

1) Securing our Olympic pipeline does not require an NCAA antitrust exemption and limiting athletes’s rights;
2) If protecting women’s sports is truly important, enforce Title IX, do not further empower the entity the isn’t even subject to it.

And I would add that like you, @MarcEdelman, @McCannSportsLaw is one of the few commentators who is highly credible. You are both true academics who are disinterested and analytical, not simply advocates. A badly needed perspective in this policy process.
Excellent article by @McCannSportsLaw. Part of what makes Mike's work uniquely excellent on this topic is his institutional knowledge of both the history and case law involving Law v. NCAA.

Finally, a decision in the PTPA's antitrust lawsuit against the worldwide tennis cartel, brought by players on the pro circuit who endure an 11-month season and are penalized for injuries. It's Ad Plaintiffs.
The court denied motions to dismiss, motions to arbitrate, and jurisdictional challenges.
This case has everything -- agreements to suppress prize money, restrictions on NIL deals, forced boycotts of competing tournaments, noncompetes, a healthy dose of retaliation at Wimbledon this summer. And the Australian Open already settled and agreed to cooperate with plaintiffs during discovery.
The arbitration decision will bring controversy and probably be appealed within the month. Still a ways to go, but this is a big win.

Every powerful backer of the Protect College Sports Act got something: pooled TV money, a frozen conference map, capped labor costs, an antitrust exemption. Who was negotiating for the revenue athletes, and why is Sen. Maria Cantwell all in? My thoughts: linkedin.com/pulse/newslette…
Ted Cruz, Cody Campbell, President Trump, Randy Levine, Nick Saban, Deion Sanders, Charlie Baker, and Maria Cantwell can’t be happy that the Protect College Sports Act, which passed easily in the Senate, may never become law.
I’ll try my best at concisely explaining each of their motivations in tomorrow’s #NIL newsletter.

Politicians and college officials trying to blame the players. On brand.
Cantwell's report relies on GAO data from before the House settlement ushered in revenue sharing. The GAO data actually shows that Division I spending on coaches grew faster than spending on athlete scholarships, up to twice as fast, from 2014 to 2024.
Players didn't cause the deficit. The schools did. The players shouldn't be the ones paying for that overspending. And Congress shouldn't bail the schools out with an antitrust exemption.

On Sept. 9, 1934, the Detroit Free Press sports front blazed with a huge Hebrew headline, “L’shana Tova Tikatevu” saluting Tigers star Hank Greenberg and declaring: “And so to you, Mr. Greenberg, the Tiger fans say, ‘L’shana Tova!’”

The SEC's legal battle with LSU, and the Big 12's now-resolved legal battle with Texas Tech, are signs we're entering a new era of college sports law:
The conferences using the courts to enforce their rules.

Not long ago, many college kickers weren’t even on scholarship.
In the NIL era, kickers quietly share pay information with each other to leverage big raises. One kicker makes $600,000.

This is *such* a disappointing decision, @usopen. Not a week goes by when the tennis' Integrity unit - that you help fund - fails to announce a match-fixing scandal...and you take sponsorship $ from a platform predicated on profiting from inside information? No way to spin this as a positive....
