THE TRUMP EFFECT AND THE CONFIDENCE TRAP: HOW PERCEPTION DEFEATS INTELLIGENCE
It seems that hardly anyone still doubts that Trump is an idiot. His absurd behavior, economic ignorance, limited vocabulary, narcissism, contradictory statements, and constant reversals have even earned him the nickname TACO โ Trump Always Chickens Out. But the real question is: how did someone like him become president of the United States?
Niccolรฒ Machiavelli offered an explanation 500 years ago. Power is a performance. The winner is not necessarily the person who knows the most, but the one who performs most convincingly. Politics rewards appearances, confidence, and the ability to create an image of strength. People do not always seek truth. They seek certainty.
Intelligent people recognize complexity. They understand consequences, compromises, probabilities, and uncertainty. They hesitate before making promises because they know reality rarely offers simple answers. But crowds often interpret caution as weakness. One person says, โWe need to analyze the consequences.โ Another declares, โI know exactly how to fix everything!โ Guess whom the crowd follows.
Modern psychology describes a related phenomenon: the Dunning-Kruger effect. People with limited competence may overestimate their abilities, while genuine experts are often more conscious of what they do not know. Confidence becomes a substitute for competence. The louder someone speaks, the more certain they appear, and the easier it becomes for others to mistake conviction for knowledge. As Shakespeare wrote, โThe fool doth think he is wise, but the wise man knows himself to be a fool.โ
This is the trap of modern politics. People who speak as though they know everything can attract enormous audiences, while those who carefully explain complicated realities struggle to be heard. But the greatest danger begins when such a leader actually gains power.
Machiavelli wrote: โThe first method for estimating the intelligence of a ruler is to look at the men he has around him.โ A weak leader fears strong personalities. He dislikes independent judgment, criticism, and anyone who might demonstrate greater competence. Instead of surrounding himself with experts, he chooses loyalists. Instead of people who identify problems, he appoints people who conceal them. Instead of advisers who challenge his decisions, he prefers those who applaud every word.
And incompetence spreads downward through the entire system. Eventually, the government becomes an ecosystem of mediocrity, where loyalty matters more than ability, criticism is treated as betrayal, and uncomfortable truths are systematically suppressed. Such a leader does not strengthen institutions. He gradually destroys them from within.
He fears independent experts because they expose his limitations. He fears honest feedback because it threatens his carefully manufactured image of greatness. And when a genuine crisis arrives, this system reveals its weaknesses. There is no depth, no independent expertise, no flexibility. Only mutual fear, personal loyalty, and illusions of strength.
History has repeatedly demonstrated how dangerous such political structures can become. The tragedy is that societies continue to reward the very qualities that make these systems possible. Why do people follow leaders who promise easy solutions, speak loudly, and never admit uncertainty? The answer lies not only in Trump, but in human psychology.
Our brains seek shortcuts. Confidence, decisiveness, and simple explanations feel reassuring, especially during periods of fear and instability. But confidence is not intelligence. Charisma is not competence.
The greatest political danger begins when a society can no longer distinguish between someone who understands reality and someone who merely sounds certain about it.
And that brings us to the most uncomfortable question of all: why do voters repeatedly mistake the performance of leadership for leadership itself?

In the north of Iceland a farmer once walked out to his sheep house on a clear evening, found that one ewe had come in off the hill on her own and would not be moved, and went back inside and told his family to prepare for a storm.
Her name was Kraga. She was a leader ewe, one of the strain of Icelandic sheep bred for a thousand years to walk at the front and read the sky, and the farmer's account of her survives in the book of leader-sheep stories a sheep breeder collected in the 1950s because the old men who remembered them were dying.
The flock was out on the winter grazing, as flocks were then, and the evening gave no sign of anything. Kraga had left them and come home. She stood in the sheep house and refused the open door. The farmer had learned what that meant and did not argue. The next morning he woke to the roar of the sea and a blizzard that had come in off the Arctic in the night, the kind that killed sheep by the hundred on the open hill and men with them. His flock was in the barn, because he had gone out and fetched them in on the word of a ewe.
The pattern turns up in story after story. The leader that will not go out on a fine morning. The leader that comes in from the hill at noon with no apparent reason and stands by the door. The farmers did not understand how the animal knew, and did not need to. They wrote down the date, the weather that came, and the name of the sheep, and bred from her.
A few years ago Norwegian scientists ran a proper test. Flocks with a leader sheep in them, faced with a mock predator, behaved differently from flocks without one: calmer, more cohesive, less likely to scatter and die. The animal the farmers had been describing for ten centuries turned out to exist on a spreadsheet.
A ewe knew the weather before the barometer did, and a hungry country bet its winter on her and won.
The sheep is the animal this country uses as a byword for stupidity. In Iceland they let one decide when the flock went out.

The federal energy regulator, led by a Trump appointee, is reviewing an application for an underwater AI data center in Alaska's Cook Inlet.
Among the first of its kind in American waters.
350 turbines. 66 server "hives." Sunk into the seafloor.
Only about 330 endangered belugas are left in Cook Inlet, down from roughly 1,300 in 1979. The Center for Biological Diversity says the site would sit inside their critical habitat.
They can't see through the glacial silt, so they talk, and they click to find food. Mothers and calves use a special call to stay in touch, and scientists say ship noise can drown it out.
The Center for Biological Diversity warns that noise from building and running those turbines could disrupt how belugas feed and communicate, and push them out of habitat they need.
It's not just the whales. A commercial fishing group says DeepGreen never studied the impact on the 1,300+ active fishing permits in Upper Cook Inlet.
DeepGreen's parent company was formed in January 2026. It has no public website, and its Delaware filings don't say who owns it.
The Alaska Energy Authority says DeepGreen never even contacted them, despite the company claiming ties to the state's own power grid project, and called facts in DeepGreen's filing "dead wrong." Regulators also found DeepGreen never notified the city of Kenai or identified the tribes and Alaska Native corporations affected. DeepGreen fixed it a week later, only after regulators flagged it.
At this point, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is only deciding whether to let DeepGreen study the site. And even past surveys in Cook Inlet needed federal permission to disturb them. As far as the reporting shows, DeepGreen doesn't have it.
The belugas can't speak up in this review. You can. Tell the commission to deny this application.

BREAKING: BRAVO! Volodymyr Zelenskyy is directly asked if he thinks that Trump is using him as a "scapegoat" for his failed presidency โ and the Ukrainian President's response is PERFECT.
This man is truly a gift to his people...
"It's a pretty difficult midterm elections. His personal popularity is very low, diesel prices in the U.S. are very high, and the war that he started in the Middle East is not going the way he wants it. Do you think you are being treated as a scapegoat for his own problems?" a reporter asked Zelenskyy at a European Council summit in Brussels.
Take a moment to consider how you would respond were you in Zelenskyy's shoes.
Trump has been relentlessly smearing you.
He just cut a "deal" with Putin to flood the global markets with Russian diesel, pumping money into a war machine that is slaughtering innocent Ukrainian men, women, and children.
Then, the Starlink service that you use to prevent Russian drones from striking civilian targets inside your country has its service interrupted, seemingly by the White House.
Although he must have been raging inside, Zelenskyy listened carefully to the reporter's question. He then paused for over ten seconds, letting his silence stretch and fill with dramatic meaning.
He then cracked a knowing smirk and the room erupted into laughter. He paused, leaned forward, still smiling and said: "This is my answer."
"Thank you so much," the reporter said as the room continued to laugh.
This is the perfect way to thread the needle. Zelenskyy managed to agree with the assessment that Trump is scapegoating him for his problems without having to say it out loud. He's not afraid to embarrass this disgrace of a President, but at the same time his ultimate responsibility is to the wellbeing of the Ukrainian people. He doesn't want to alienate Trump so badly that there's no hope for a reconciliation and a full resumption of American military support.
This is how it's done.
Please โค๏ธ and share if you think that Zelenskyy is a hero!
If only.

๐จ Elon Musk has finally complied with the demands and provided the list of shareholders of X Holding Corp who helped purchase Twitter. And who do you think turned out to be investors in the X platform, besides Islamists and Trump's lobby? That's right, Petr Aven and Vadim Moshkovich. Now it is absolutely obvious where Musk's love for Russia comes from. ๐โผ๏ธ
Let me remind you who Aven and Moshkovich are.
Petr Aven is a Russian billionaire and founder of Alfa Group, which is one of Putin's main financial backers. This man is completely controlled by the Kremlin. Aven is one of Putin's oldest friends. In fact, without Petr's intervention, Putin would have ended up in prison instead of becoming president. After all, Aven covered for Vladimir Putin in 1992, when Putin organized illegal trading in export licenses. Aven also attended a meeting with Putin on February 24, 2022, marking the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine.
โผ๏ธ Vadim Moshkovich is a sanctioned Russian agricultural billionaire who was a member of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation. In other words, he officially belonged to Putin's innermost circle. Moshkovich owns Rusagro, Russia's largest agricultural holding company. โผ๏ธ
Another interesting figure is Al-Waleed bin Talal Al Saud, who appears on the list of investors no fewer than three times, both personally and through his company, Kingdom Holding Company. This man continues his investment business in Russia and privately supports Hamas in its war against Israel. In his investments in Russia, he regularly cooperates with Rosneft, Lukoil, and Gazprom.
โ
Everyone was wondering how it was possible that Twitter (X) shares were falling, advertisers were terminating contracts, and nobody was doing anything. After all, this was causing direct financial damage to investors.
But everyone overlooked the fact that the investors did not care about profits. They needed the platform to promote their narratives, such as supporting Putin and Russia, lobbying for a freeze of the war in Ukraine, pushing Ukraine-related issues out of the top news stories, justifying Hamas's activities, and so on. ๐ณ

BREAKING: The Catholic Archbishop of the U.S. military enrages MAGA by announcing that Catholic soldiers must not take part in the public execution of Nidal Hasan.
Pete Hegseth is about to blow a gasket...
โIn addition to supporting and subscribing to the statement by my brothers the Bishops of Texas, it is my duty to express my disapproval of what is proposed regarding the execution of the terrorist Hasan in the Archdiocese entrusted to my spiritual care to be done by those for whose salvation I have been constituted as the Archbishop for the Military Services, USA," stated Archbishop Timothy Broglio, who is in charge of Catholic pastoral services for the U.S. military.
He was referring to a statement put out by the Texas Catholic Conference of Bishops condemning Hegseth's plan to livestream Hasan's execution because it would "make a spectacle of death" and fail to achieve "true justice." Broglio was no doubt drawing attention to the Texas bishops' statement specifically because Hasan committed his mass shooting at Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas.
While we have absolutely zero sympathy for Hasan, we also adamantly oppose MAGA's efforts to turn us into an even more bloodthirsty nation where public killings are broadcast for the entertainment of the masses. We are the United States of America, not ancient Rome.
โFirst of all, I renew my expression of heartfelt sympathy to the families and friends of those who died in the attack at Fort Hood," Broglio continued.ย "It was an attack that disregarded the dignity of the human person. I had the sad duty of presiding and preaching at the funeral of Michael Grant Cahill, the only civilian killed in that attack."
โSecondly, I repeat the opposition of the Catholic Church to capital punishment.ย The Catechism was already clear and Pope Francis made it even clearer.ย The dignity of the human person is again at stake."
โThirdly, do we really want to imitate the terrorists of this world and make a public spectacle of barbarically killing our adversaries?ย The crime committed by Nidal Malik Hasan was heinous, but does exposing the public to his execution serve any purpose?ย Has the potential moral injury, which the members of the firing squad might experience, been considered?ย Will the exposure of a live-stream to the young and impressionable during the 250th anniversary year of our independence be able to be repaired?"ย
"The US military generally enjoys a good reputation in the world," he continued. "Is there really a value to throwing them in the same boat with terrorists by broadcasting the image of the execution of a man in a wheel chair to the whole world? Does this decision reflect the dignity of the human person?"
โI call upon all men and women of good will to ask that this decision be reconsidered and, at the very least, do what is possible to keep the exposure to the live-streaming of the proposed execution from the vision of the young and impressionable," he went on.ย
"As I would in the case of a procured abortion, I oblige any Catholics assigned to the firing squad to request to be excused from this action contrary to the teaching of the Church," concluded Broglio.
Regardless of one's thinking about the Catholic Church's teachings on other issues, we wholeheartedly agree with their staunch opposition to the death penalty and particularly public executions.
Hegseth and Trump want to normalize this kind of brutality โ likely setting the stage for even more heinous displays of fascist violence โ and at the same time they know that it's red meat for their mindless, jabbering base who will delight in watching a Muslim be killed on television. The moral weight of history is on our side. We must stand up and stop this.
Please โค๏ธ and share if you oppose public executions!

BREAKING: โI WILL NEVER STOP!โ Activist "JoJo from Jerz" reveals how Trump and Melania tried to SILENCE her with legal threats โ and the single mother REFUSED to surrender!
Joanne Carducci, the firebrand progressive blogger known to more than a million followers as JoJo from Jerz, has revealed a months-long legal ordeal that she says left her crying every day, terrified of losing her home, and desperately trying to protect her two children.
Her account begins with threatening letters from attorneys representing Donald and Melania Trump, demanding that she retract statements, apologize, and pay money over things she'd posted online. According to Carducci, the demands eventually became entirely about Melania.
According to Carducci, the Trumps' attorney initially demanded that she retract statements she'd made online, including her claim that Trump incited the deadly January 6 insurrection. She was also ordered to issue a full apology, admit that she had knowingly lied, and agree to a financial payment, with just days to respond and the threat of punitive damages hanging over her.
And the price of refusing? Carducci says the lawyers eventually demanded a staggering $1 MILLION from a single mother who had once earned $16 an hour as a school paraprofessional.
โThey would take my home,โ she wrote in a deeply personal and powerful Substack essay.
Carducci says she kept the ordeal secret from her children, even as she struggled with the possibility that the house she'd worked so hard to provide for them could be taken away.
โShe was swinging a fucking wrecking ball at a mosquito, and my children lived in the building,โ Carducci wrote of Melania.
But Carducci refused to retract her criticism or issue an apology.
Former New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin stepped in to help her without charge, providing legal advice and support while she faced demands she says she could never have afforded to fight alone.
Eventually, according to Carducci, the letters stopped. She never apologized, never retracted her statements, and never agreed to the demands.
What finally persuaded her to tell the world was watching Melania Trump promote women's empowerment on television.
โSheโs for womenโs empowerment, and Iโm a fucking natural blonde,โ Carducci wrote.
The contrast is striking: a first lady publicly encouraging women to find their voices, while a woman who had used hers says she spent months fearing the consequences of refusing to be silent.
Carducci acknowledges that she's still frightened. She also insists that her work as a satirist, mocking powerful public figures, is an exercise of her right to free expression.
And after months of keeping the ordeal from even her own children, she has a message for the people she says tried to intimidate her:
โBecause I am never, EVER going to stop.โ

Claude Malhuret Was Right about Trump.
On Friday, at Trump's direction, the US Treasury issued a license waving Russian diesel back onto the world market, days after Russia killed dozens of Ukrainians, many of them children. It seems a good moment to revisit the speech in which a French senator told us exactly who these people were.
Claude Malhuret took the floor of the Luxembourg Palace and delivered what may be the most surgical dismantling of the Trump administration ever spoken in a legislative chamber. There were no diplomatic niceties, only a point-by-point indictment from an ally who had clearly had enough.
"A year ago, here in France, I compared Trump's presidency to Nero's Court. I was wrong. It's the Court of Miracles. An anti-vaxxer, former heroin addict as Minister of Health," he began, meaning RFK Jr.
Then came the rest of the cabinet: "A climate-skeptic Minister of Economy. An alcoholic TV host, Minister of the Armed Forces. An old Qatar agent, Minister of Justice. A groupie of Putin, Minister of National Security." That would be Scott Bessent, Pete Hegseth, Pam Bondi and Tulsi Gabbard.
"A Turkish proverb says: when a clown settles in a palace, he does not become king, it is the palace that becomes a circus."
The circus has been busy. Trump came off a phone call with Putin and announced on Truth Social that Russia would send millions of tons of diesel to the world market, promising in capital letters that prices "will be COMING DOWN, IN RECORD NUMBERS, AND FAST!"
Bessent's Treasury promptly made it legal, barely a month after Trump signed a sweeping Russia sanctions law, as NPR points out.
The motive is not hard to find. Diesel prices in America have doubled since the war with Iran began in February and the midterms are weeks away, so the man who set the fuel market on fire is now buying the extinguisher from Vladimir Putin and sending the bill to Ukraine.
According to Axios, Kyiv was blindsided while Witkoff and Kushner were sitting with Ukrainian officials to discuss ending the war, and an analyst told the outlet the volumes are too small to fix the shortage anyway.
So Putin gets revenue and respectability, Americans may or may not get cheaper diesel, and Ukrainians get more missiles. Zelensky called it weakness from partners who are supposed to be strong, which is the polite version. Malhuret gave us the impolite one long ago, and he has been proved right down to the last clown.
Watch the speech and share it loudly.
