Thank you to James O’Brien @mrjamesob for the free advertisement on LBC this morning.
The Free Speech Union was founded by Toby Young in 2020, two years after his own cancellation. In 2018, shortly after he was appointed to the board of the Office for Students on the strength of his work in education, the offence archaeologists launched a campaign against him. He was forced to resign from five posts, losing half his income and much of his reputation. He wished there had been an organisation he could turn to for help.
The FSU now has more than 50,000 members and has taken on more than 7,000 cases in six years. We receive between 40 and 70 new requests for help every week, and we have saved countless people from losing their jobs, their university places or their liberty simply for exercising their lawful right to free speech.
Often, the process is the punishment — we offer mental health support to our members who need it. The prospect of losing your job and livelihood over something you said can be extremely distressing. You can read the first report ever published on the mental health effects of cancellation by Carole Sherwood and Andrew MacLeod with a forward from Lord Young below.
It was in recognition of Toby’s work defending free speech that Kemi Badenoch nominated him for a peerage. That means the FSU can now do more than ever to protect free speech in Britain, at a time when it is under attack from all sides.
More than 60,000 people were arrested for “communications offences” between 2021 and 2025, a @BigBrotherWatch report found.
If the police turn up at your door and haul you into a cell for hours over something you’ve said online — as they did to Maxie Allen (@MaxieAllen) and Rosalind Levine — an FSU membership will be the best money you ever spend. We provided their lawyers, covered their legal fees and secured £20,000 in compensation and an admission of wrongful arrest from Hertfordshire Police.
Join today. You never know when you might need us!👇
It's an incredible cut, I would never have noticed if it wasn't pointed out.
Here's another example from an ad that is 30 years old now and still blows my mind - keep an eye on the location, the jumps are quite.. spectacular.😂

I’m sure President Zelensky appreciates the fashion advice @Nigel_Farage. Anything to say on how your mates Trump & Vance handled the meeting?

Among the least likeable of human beings are bullies, and those who toady to them. Trump – Putin’s Poodle – manages to combine both: his arrogant bullying of Zelensky, in the service of his barfworthy toadying to the Russian bully.

Trump's conversion of rthe United States into a satellite of Russia is a horrifying and degrading betrayal of democracy and liberty and a monstrous act against Ukraine but it is also exceptionally dangerous for the world. Any GOP members of Congress not speaking out loudly and vehemently will go down in history as quisling accomplices in this act of profound shame and wickedness
He used to be a Labour MP.
Three cheers for @realDonaldTrump and @JDVance, who told Zelenskyy a few home truths today about the needless bloody war in #Ukraine.
Let's give peace a chance.

The Brexit architects merry go round. Cameron back to help clear up the mess his referendum created. Johnson making millions while a Covid Inquiry shreds what little was left of his credibility. Farage heading to the jungle for £1.5m to add ITV to institutions he has damaged 1/3
It’s almost like @A1an_M is too chicken to debate me.

I’ve tried to send personal thanks to all the people who’ve sent me kind and supportive messages, but there are too many of you. So thank you — with so much rage and unreason flying about, it’s good to know that plenty of people are thinking and listening and staying rational.

British politicians know perfectly well why the BBC avoids the word ‘terrorist’, and over the years plenty of them have privately agreed with it. Calling someone a terrorist means you’re taking sides and ceasing to treat the situation with due impartiality. The BBC’s job is to place the facts before its audience and let them decide what they think, honestly and without ranting. That’s why, in Britain and throughout the world, nearly half a billion people watch, listen to and read us. There’s always someone who would like us to rant. Sorry, it’s not what we do.

Israeli security forces and Palestinian armed groups must make every effort to protect the lives of civilians in today’s outbreak of fighting in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

Now everyone’s vegan, why not relaunch Spud-U-Like? That was a chain ahead of its time.
Come on, @A1an_M - can we set a date for our debate?
Replying to @MaxieAllen
And as you kept saying Hotez was a coward for declining to debate, you won’t decline this invitation, will you, Alan?
