JUST IN 🔥 First documented human Shamonda virus (orthobunyavirus) infection has been reported in France. A severely immunocompromised patient in Lyon died in early October after infection (likely midge-borne, linked to animal circulation in eastern France). French authorities, ECDC, and WHO describe it as exceptional/isolated with no identified general-population or human-to-human risk to date, investigations continue. The virus has circulated in European livestock (cattle and others) since summer 2026 across multiple countries. Why this information matters: 🔥 Novel zoonotic signal in Europe; 🔥 Reinforces One Health surveillance and awareness in immunocompromised patients with compatible exposures. (French health/agriculture ministries and ECDC 22–23 Oct 2026; WHO/ECDC monitoring.)
