I'm abandoning this ship leaving the muskrats behind. Sorry to disengage with the competent crew on here. Bad cess to them alone. You know where to find me.

2/n the reason mink are concerning is not just that they are another mammal but that they are a relative of ferrets the major laboratory animal used to study flu. Potentially an enzootic going unchecked among mink just as seasonal flu is accelerating means both H5N1 and H1N1 or H3N2 could reassert and generate a very serious new flu pathogens for humans

The share of households where the man isn’t the main breadwinner keeps declining. We know this trend will continue because women outperform men in education by a country mile now. Education is still the best indicator for income. Source: buff.ly/0pndYwD

We're headed for an El Niño that is — quite literally — off the charts.
WMO's Global Seasonal Climate Update shows that El Niño is forecast to exceed the scale of global monitoring charts. Its impacts will be felt well into 2027.

Schools ignoring results of flawed survey
Denominational schools, where a majority of parents told the primary school survey they wanted a change of ethos, are now telling parents there will be no change.
Atheist Ireland said last December, and again in April, that the survey was a misleading and harmful distraction from the task of having schools that respect equally the freedom of religion or belief of all students, parents, and teachers.
These recent revelations vindicate this. Some schools have said they will remain denominational, despite majorities of parents wanting a change. So the survey question was misleading, the process ignored human rights, and now schools are ignoring the flawed outcome anyway.
The survey question was misleading
First look at the survey itself, which closed last December. The survey misleadingly implied that there was an option to choose non-religious schools, when in reality the choice was between two different types of religious schools (denominational and multi-denominational).
The survey used the misleading question “Would you prefer your primary school to operate under a denominational (religious) patron or to operate under a multi-denominational (non-religious) patron?” But multi-denominational is not the same as non-religious.
The relevant issue is not the religious makeup of the patron body, but the ethos of the school. Multi-denominational schools can have a Catholic chaplain, religious worship, their own religion and ethics courses, and celebrate religious festivals.
The process ignored human rights
More importantly, the survey process itself harmfully implied that your child’s human right to an objective, critical, and pluralistic education is subject to surveys of your family’s neighbours.
Secular state-funded schools based on human rights should be the default in any neighbourhood. Any local child should have equal access, and have their rights respected, regardless of anybody’s religious or nonreligious beliefs.
These state-funded schools should teach objectively about all religions and beliefs, without promoting either religion or atheism. The UN has repeatedly told Ireland to open such schools.
Schools are ignoring the outcome anyway
Now schools are ignoring even the flawed outcome of this flawed survey. Schools where a majority of parents told the survey they wanted a change of ethos are telling parents there will be no change.
The Department told schools to consult with school stakeholders, but the Patron body takes the final decision. And parents are reporting difficulties in getting parents’ associations, parents’ reps on school management boards, and the National Parents Council to support their concerns.
Changing these schools to multidenominational wouldn’t have solved the problem anyway. It would have given some nonreligious or minority faith parents some relief from the worst of the discrimination they face. But there would still be no non-denominational schools.
And most nonreligious or minority faith parents, with children in other schools, would be told that their children’s human right to an objective, critical, and pluralistic education is subject to what most of their neighbours believe.
Atheist Ireland expected this outcome. But we will continue to campaign for a secular state education system that respects human rights, regardless of the religious or non-religious beliefs of parents, children, staff, or board members.

If we talk about how to fix crumbling healthcare system, but are actively quiet about HAIs, we are not honestly tackling the problem.

The post below highlights demand-side failure: at current rates, electrifying Ireland’s heat and transport won’t finish for over a hundred years... (if even)
The supply side is just as broken: Renewables hit only 41% of electricity in 2025, nowhere near the 80% target for 2030, while 11–13% of available wind and solar is switched off because the grid can’t handle it. Supply is not keeping up with demand, and British imported gas and imported electricity tries to fill the gap.
Netzero is failing on both sides at once.
💤 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘇𝗲𝗿𝗼? 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻? 💤
Sometimes we forget: the green transition involves electrifying sectors that use fossil-fuels (by definition) Maybe if electrical energy was abundant and cheap, not 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱, we would move quicker.
At current pace, its not even happening in your lifetime. Based on a *current* trajectory, full electrification of the All-Island Heat and Transport sectors would not be completed until the year 2133
• Target All-Island H&T Demand: 40.0 TWh electrical
• Current H&T Demand Achieved (to 2026): ~2.5 TWh
• Remaining Gap to Electrify: 37.5 TWh
• Actual Linear Growth Rate: 0.35 TWh / yr
🚘 >100,000 EVs registered / yr
🚿 >40,000 heat pumps installed /yr
• Time to Completion: 37.5 divided by 0.35 = 𝟭𝟬𝟳 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀

“We've arranged a global civilization in which most crucial elements profoundly depend on science and technology.
