Rajni grew up at a Mobile Creches centre. When she lost her mother and brother, it was the place she turned to again. With a younger sister depending on her, Rajni trained as a care worker at the same centre. Her work paid for her sister’s education and marriage, and she kept working after her own marriage.
Today, she looks after children in the rooms where she once spent her own childhood.
For Rajni, this is more than a job. It is a way of giving other children the care and security that shaped her own early years.

“What did the child eat last night? How did they sleep? Is anything troubling them?”
Every morning at 8am, Lalitha asks these questions of the parents of 48 children at a construction site in Gurugram. Before any mother or father walks into a day of hard labour, she assures them that their most precious responsibility is in good hands.
“A mother going to work against all odds may not know everything her child learns here. But what she knows is that one didi is taking care of her child so she can work in peace,” she says. Lalitha has been that didi for nearly 12 years, as a care worker with Mobile Creches.
For migrant families, that peace of mind is rare. Anganwadis close at 12 noon, hours before their shifts end. And the families keep moving, with about 60% of children leaving a centre every three to four months.
Mobile creches has spent 57 years closing that very gap, ever since a makeshift creche at Rajghat in 1969.
It offers a full-day care for children where families work and live, with meals, health checkups and early learning.
But CEO Sumitra Mishra is clear that no one organisation can do this alone. “Childcare is economic infrastructure. It is the foundation of any nation and empowers parents,” she says.
So what would it take to make it everyone’s responsibility? Mobile Creches’ “care circle” offers a way forward.

Childcare is a workforce enabler.
Maina's story shows how a neighbourhood creche didn't just support her child - it opened her own path to employment.
Equal pay starts with equal access to care.

#EqualPayDay
Equal pay starts long before the workplace. It starts with equal access to care.
In their new blog, Amit Kumar @amitjha_73, Head, Sustainable and Inclusive Growth, @UNDP_India and Karina Bhasin, Project Coordinator ask: Can we really advance gender pay equity without first ensuring women have an equal opportunity to participate in paid work?
For Maina, a neighbourhood crèche and training from @Mobile_Creches opened the door to her first job as a crèche helper.
Affordable, quality childcare can help more women enter the workforce and close the gender pay gap.

Early childhood development improves individual outcomes and also contributes to healthier, more productive societies. However, achieving these outcomes requires consistent and adequate financing. As part of our ongoing collaboration with Mobile Creches we bring to you final episode, where discuss this with Shekufeh Zonji, Global Technical Lead at Early Childhood Development Action Network.
