📣⚖️CALL FOR EVIDENCE NOW OPEN📣⚖️ My son Joshua Robbins was 23 when he died after a communal railing gave way. He was at home, relying on a safety structure to do the one thing it was there to do. As his mum, I want to understand how that happened and what could prevent another family going through it. The Ministry of Justice is asking whether to raise the standard of proof for a formal finding of unlawful killing at inquests in England and Wales. Today the test is the balance of probabilities, meaning more likely than not. The option being considered would require proof beyond reasonable doubt. I believe the current standard should stay. Where no charges are brought, an inquest may be the only public hearing where a family gets to hear the evidence about how their loved one died. If that evidence meets today’s test for unlawful killing, I believe the coroner or jury should be able to put that finding on the public record. Joshua’s inquest is already open. If the law changes, families waiting for their inquests deserve a clear answer about which test will apply. If you’ve been through an inquest, supported a bereaved family, or work in law, policing, healthcare, housing or building safety, please take part. Tell the Ministry what a higher threshold would mean in practice. I’d particularly like people working in housing and building safety to bring their experience to this consultation. The consultation closes on Monday 7 December 2026. Please respond if you can, and share it with someone whose experience the Ministry should hear. Its not just the old Victorian prisons that are crumbling - even jails built in the 1970s are in dire need of refurbishment or replacement
Published today, 'Fit for purpose or falling apart? A review of living conditions in prison', finds overcrowding, poor sanitation and aging infrastructure in much of the estate, with too many housed in inadequate conditions. Read the report: hmiprisons.justiceinspectora…

Outside the Supreme Court, where the Palestine Action appeal hearing closed for the day, a man was arrested for saying, "In the UK, it's a crime to say, I support Palestine Action". Police reportedly said it was due to the length of the pause between "crime to say" and "I support.."

Our challenge of the Palestine Action ban at the Supreme Court will begin shortly - at 10.30AM. We are arguing that the ban is disproportionate to free speech and the right to protest, so it must be quashed. Live link: supremecourt.uk/cases/uksc-2… I will also be live posting below.

Every year in the UK, 200,000 mother pigs spend weeks at a time behind metal bars. In nature, a mother pig would shape a nest out of grass and twigs to build a safe place for her babies to arrive. In a farrowing cage, there’s no room to turn around, no way to make a nest, and no way to properly reach the piglets she’s giving birth to. Her young are taken from her after about a month. Then the cycle begins again. It doesn’t have to be this way, and it starts with what’s on our plates. Every plant-based meal is a step towards a world for mother pigs and their piglets. As PSNI turns 25, it faces a challenge: community representativeness. 31% of PSNI are from Catholic background, and declining (overall pop. = 46%). Of 427 police trainees in 2026, just 20% Catholic. As with Patten, this requires a political solution not just a policing one.

The grim photographs and survey findings in @HMIPrisonsnews' ‘Fit for purpose or falling apart? A review of living conditions in prison’ report reveal how the prison system has become a vicious circle, failing everyone and holding the country back. ow.ly/PjA25103iKv

Positive growth. Though a quirk with these figures is that the Minister is quoting 4060 students in 2020/21. In 2009/10 there were 4032 students at Magee. By 2014/15 there were 5098. So if we work from 2015 it'd be growth of 32% rather than 66%. The uncomfortable question for Ulster University and Stormont Ministers is, why did they allow those numbers at Magee to plummet by about 1000 from 2015-2021? And why did the Executive prioritise Belfast with a £370m build that gifted it 84% of the North's students instead of investing in Magee? You may say that's in the past. It is not, what we're seeing with job cuts and Magee projects being cut/scaled back today is all directly and intimately linked. Most of the growth at Magee in recent years came from Allied Health courses moving, which had to be prised away from Belfast, while post-grad remained in Belfast. It's well known that growth is easier when the bar is so low to begin with. All the hard yards lie ahead. Remember, 10,000 isn't some magic number when a city of a similar size in Galway has 25,000. Credit where it is due but the wheels have well and truly come off. Anyone pretending otherwise is only fooling themselves. If someone can tell me how cutting 450 staff, scrapping a sports dome and downsizing a medical school are positive signs that the train remains on track then koombaya m'Lord, give me some of that feel-good energy... The hard reality is, Belfast was prioritised by the Executive with a £370m build. That blew the Higher Education budget. UU/Stormont are now trying to save face by pretending Magee actually matters. If it truly mattered then Sinn Fein and SDLP leadership would say that the 84% Belfast has is unacceptable and needs to be rebalanced — at pace. To casual observers, saying Magee deserves 10,000 students is tokenism if parties can't say that 84% — which no other city in Ireland or Britain comes close to — is a scandalous position to be in. And a mess of their making.

How exciting it will be to - lead a faculty through mass redundancies, - impose workloads that will lead to sickness - decimate the learning experience of 1000s of students If whoever gets this role is “excited” by all of this, they will already have lost staff confidence
So inspiring when your university is facing 450 redundancies to see a manager post advertised as an 'exciting opportunity' to lead the faculty through a 'period of transformation'. Have they taken lessons from @ass_deans ??
