Two days before the adoption of another momentous UN Security Council resolution on Western Sahara, the German Foreign Ministry has once again expressed its support for the Moroccan autonomy plan as the basis for a political solution to the dispute engineered by Spain and Algeria. Sixty-one years after the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 2072, calling on Spain to enter into negotiations with Morocco and Mauritania—which had also asserted its claims to the territory at the time—over “the problems relating to sovereignty presented by these two Territories” (Spanish Sahara and Ifni), this long-standing dispute is finally approaching its end. When the dispute was first brought before the United Nations, it was clear that, from the General Assembly's perspective, the question of sovereignty over the territory was at the heart of the disagreement between Morocco and Spain. Yet, in subsequent years and decades, the dispute evolved in a direction that served the strategic interests of Spain and its Algerian ally. Nevertheless, no matter how often lies and falsehoods are repeated and propagated, and regardless of how many people embrace and defend them, truth and justice ultimately prevail. This is precisely what we are witnessing today. The new resolution that the Security Council is poised to adopt will finally do justice to a country that has paid a heavy price for dealing with both Spain and Algeria in good faith. A country that, for decades, has been portrayed by a cohort of self-righteous leftists as reactionary, while another country, itself born out of colonialism, has not only escaped scrutiny but has been celebrated as a champion of oppressed peoples and liberation from the yoke of colonial domination. As I explained in the two books I devoted to this dispute, without the treacherous and unholy alliance between Spain and Algeria, Morocco could have closed this chapter of Spanish colonialism in the 1960s. But it is never too late. The fact that Morocco has managed to achieve this diplomatic feat carries special significance for us Moroccans.
