It’s May Day! May Day! But there’s no cause for distress here in sunny St Albans. Of course, the call for aid wasn’t actually named after the festival - it was invented in the 1920s from an anglicised form of the French for “help me” (m’aidez).

Interesting to see 19th century electoral corruption depicted in this mural in St Albans, where the museum holds a fascinating sketchbook relating to the bribery investigation (stalbansmuseums.org.uk/about…).

Brilliant to have a visit from @MouseBishop, and where better to have your photo taken!
The medieval city of St Albans was built some distance away from its Roman predecessor, Verulamium, which has greatly aided archaeological discovery. This incredible shell mosaic was rediscovered by Tessa and Mortimer Wheeler in the 1930s. It is ~1,875 years old. #MosaicMonday

Are you affected by loneliness? Do you know someone who is? I'm hosting a discussion @StPaulsStAlbans on Sunday 11th. Everyone is welcome from 1845. There will be tea, coffee and cakes, and (most importantly) nice people, all in a relaxed & comfortable setting.
We'll be starting with my @tedxstalbans talk youtu.be/sPsvOd-kwVU?si=JExt… then looking at how we can be part of the solution to one of the greatest challenges to our health and wellbeing. Whether or not you can make it, please share this post with anyone you think may be interested.

We’ve found the Book of Hours captured by Holbein in his famous portrait of #ThomasCromwell! Cromwell’s book is one of the few objects depicted in a Tudor portrait to survive. @TracyBorman has dubbed it “the most exciting Cromwell discovery in a generation - if not more.”

#OTD in 1455 the War of the Roses began with the First Battle of St Albans. King Henry VI and his army held the town centre, and the Duke of York's army attacked from the east. Fierce fight took place on Sopwell Lane, the Yorkists attack here led by the Earl of Salisbury. 1/7

It’s rather nice that @StAlbansCath is inviting people into the abbey tomorrow to watch the coronation on a big screens. People can bring their own picnics too. Really important for older people who might feel isolated. 👑
