While koalas might look like small bears, they are actually marsupials. They give birth to underdeveloped young that crawl into their mothers' pouches, where they stay for the first 6-7 months of their life. [📹 zoo_rascal]

This incredible table mechanism was first patented in 1835! 😮 Nearly 200 years later, it's still mind-blowing.

An ancient Roman fountain has begun to flow with water once more. The monument, known as the Kestros Fountain and situated in Perge near Antalya, Turkey, has been successfully brought back into operation. Constructed during the second century AD under the rule of Emperor Hadrian, the landmark was an integral component of a massive civic water infrastructure network that extended down the settlement's principal colonnaded avenue. Originally, the structure drew its supply from the Kestros River, an ancient waterway currently referred to as the Aksu. A sculpted, reclining figure representing the river deity Kestros continues to stand out as a central artistic component of the architectural complex. The decorative installation channeled water directly into an expansive stone canal that traversed the settlement for approximately 2,300 feet (700 meters). When the water system was turned back on, the archaeological collective confirmed that the initial 328 feet (100 meters) had been fully repaired, with additional preservation milestones planned for the future. This conduit originally integrated a steady supply of moving water right into the core of daily metropolitan life, running directly between the columns and storefronts that framed the thoroughfare. In the present day, the feature provides contemporary sightseers with a functional glimpse into the civil engineering practices of the historic settlement. Although the deeper historical roots of Perge precede the arrival of Roman authorities, the surviving layouts of its avenues, public bathhouses, amphitheater, and athletic stadium clearly demonstrate the immense scope of its development during the imperial Roman era. The newly operational water feature brings a rare, dynamic quality to the remaining architectural ruins. By introducing moving water back into an intact ancient streetscape, it allows onlookers to observe a piece of historic Roman infrastructure performing its original function.

An elegant yet highly effective infrastructure project in Western Australia demonstrates how simple engineering can drastically curb environmental pollution. In 2018, the City of Kwinana launched a pilot program by installing specialized drainage nets over two major stormwater discharge outlets at the Henley Nature Reserve. Designed to intercept urban runoff, these heavy-duty mesh nets allow water to pass through freely while trapping solid waste, such as beverage cans, plastic bottles, food packaging, and organic debris, before it can contaminate local ecosystems. Following the initial success, the city expanded the program to five critical locations, reporting in an August 2023 update that the system had successfully collected approximately 8,070 pounds (3,660 kilograms) of literal waste. The initiative has proven to be both economically viable and logistically practical. The initial deployment of the first two nets cost the municipality roughly A$20,000, a figure that covered the manufacturing, installation, and modification of structural access points to facilitate routine maintenance. To keep the system operating smoothly, municipal crews regularly detach, empty, weigh, and audit the contents of the nets before sending the captured debris to waste processing facilities. Maintenance schedules are dynamically adjusted based on weather conditions, with cleanings becoming far more frequent during heavy rainfall when increased street runoff carries larger volumes of trash through the storm drains. It is important to note that these drainage nets are specifically designed for physical waste interception rather than chemical water treatment or sewage filtration. By capturing solid litter directly at the source of emission—the stormwater outlets—the system prevents debris from scattering across expansive public parks, wetlands, and nature reserves. This centralized containment strategy makes the physical retrieval of trash significantly more efficient and cost-effective than attempting to collect dispersed pollution after it has already escaped into the wild, offering a scalable blueprint for urban conservation.
