Tories had 1st & 2nd Muslim cabinet ministers, along with 1st & 2nd ethnic minority leaders & PMs in Disraeli & Sunak. Now they have the first black woman leader who could be to their 4th female PM. This idea only the progressive left creates opportunity for every Briton is demonstrably bunkum.
Humza Yousaf, author of Under Fire, an important and painfully honest testament, could never have flourished in Keir Starmer’s Labour Party, still less the Conservatives. As a proud Muslim and supporter of the Palestinian cause, that would have been out of the question. In the Scottish National Party, which embraced multiculturalism as its southern counterparts drifted towards coercive liberalism, he rose to the top. @OborneTweets: Humza Yousaf's private war newstatesman.com/culture/boo…

🚨 Latest Opinium @ObserverUK poll 🚨 2026 Autumn Budget is still the best received fiscal event in 3 years. With a net rating of -6, it outperforms every fiscal event since the 2023 Autumn Statement (-4), and is very far from Reeves's 2025 Autumn Budget (-33).

The new government nationalising Poundland was not quite on my Burnham bingo card, but maybe it should have been?
I’m not an economist, so just wondering if the government begging Poundland to stay open is a sign things are going well or not?

Here's the real story of this Budget, the can being kicked down the road. This Labour government is apparently planning spending cuts on most areas of public service spending of 2.6% per year between 2028-29 and 2031-32. Pull the other one. It's got bells on.

I think this is so important. Our fiscal situation is just really bad, and having a campaign where you actually have to cost your spending commitments means Burnham should think twice before thinking he can just do 6 weeks of highly optimistic but expensive conference speeches.
I can understand why people say it feels like a May election (though it 100% took a 2026 off the table, which was a silly rumour anyway). But challenges in spending review do not disappear if you call GE. They simply shape the campaign. Not sure people have thought this through.

Mindblowing chart from OBR. In 2029 real household disposable income per person expected to be just 1% higher than in 2019. What an unbelievably awful decade. It used to grow by 2%+ every year, not 1% in 10 years.

The wales one is a reminder that MRPs from across the industry tell us Labour’s still doing badly against Plaid and SNP, and quite frankly they could lose most of their majority without a single seat lost in England (where they house still expect many losses as polling stands!)
Last night was the Conservatives’ best in a long time: four wins from five contests, three of them gains. That takes them to 29 wins since May’s local elections, more than any other party (Reform 26, Labour 26, Lib Dems 24).

Not an answer, but I remember trying to explain the Liberal Democrat’s penchant for amusing, disturbing and baroque scandals in the 2000s and 2010s to new joiners to our political team who will never have heard of them.
What is the oldest political news story you can remember? For me it's Joe Biden being selected as Obama's VP.

The more you think about the New Statesman's decision to try and compare Sally Rooney to Salman Rushdie, the more abysmally stupid it becomes.
Plus her Japanese translator would have to be murdered, her Italian translator stabbed and her Norwegian publisher shot.

This whole Alberta independence thing has really passed me by? How did it even get to this point? Purely looking at it on a map it'd be about as mad as if we had a referendum on the East Midlands starting independence proceedings.
