An excellent summary of some of the reasons so many are struggling with reading in Scotland. Glad to see Dr Gillian Evans keeping this in the spotlight.

This keynote for a principal conference on inclusion in Glasgow really focussed on the importance of relational thinking- from compliance to competency- building; punishment to accountability & outcome to process #restorativepractice
Excellent keynote from ⁦⁦@mstowerp⁩ at the start of the City heads conference on inclusion. Grateful for voices like Michelle’s and entirely consistent with becoming a Nurturing City.

There is a clear, evidence-based answer to what a refreshed *effective* literacy curriculum should like for all children, including those with dyslexia. It is not audio books. This organisation should be advocating for the science of reading.
The head of Dyslexia Scotland's first hope for a refreshed Literacy curriculum is.... audiobooks. 🤔

👍🏼 @SusanGodsland Adaptive teaching techniques are a sop when the majority of children can be taught to read, given the right instruction. The evidence that SSP is the best way to teach is strong. Why would teachers need flexibility to use other methods? 1/

I had no idea how to support children who struggled to read and write until I met @anneglennie and spoke to her for my podcast. It’s vital that every teacher, including secondary subject teachers know the science of reading, how the brain learns to read and how to support pupils
I remember my first parent-teacher conference, when a frustrated parent said to me, “how are you going to help my son read better; and don’t tell me something about finding the main idea because that doesn’t work.” I taught 11th and 12th grade at the time. And the only thing I did have to offer was “comprehension strategies,” which are really no help at all. But what do you do as a teacher when you don’t have any better training, especially in the later grades? The reason teachers persist in bad practice isn’t because they’re uncaring or stupid but because they’re bereft of any better knowledge. So, we’re left with bad practice and empathy in most cases and nothing else.

Another excellent report from @RhysWilliamsTV, a well-informed journalist who is revealing a major cause of widespread, preventable reading difficulties in Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland. Great to see @MsMillarHT and @EduResAnS who keep on keeping on. Things are changing for the better, but far too slowly.

A line I loved from @Prev_Justice is this one: "Not everybody has won the honour of hearing the intimate details of my life experience." He adds: "That's why the #ACEs framework is valuable. It gave me a way to speak safely about the pain in my life."

What with the General Election, Andy Murray dropping out of Wimbledon and the rare birth of quadlets, the fate of quarter of a million people in Gaza is 9th item on the news. We cannot forget, ignore or be silent.
