Today we turn 140! 🎉🥳
On his death Samuel Taylor Chadwick left £5000 to Bolton for “building, furnishing & maintenance of a Museum of Natural History”. Years have passed but we still have objects from this time in our collection including this penguin which joined us in 1909!

Our first curators were father & son William & Thomas Midgley. In 1907 they helped form The Bolton Field Naturalists’ Society.
✨Big news✨
Our new summer exhibition looks at the Field Nats & the #BirdsofBolton. Exciting things coming at the end of the month - watch this space!

#AskAConservatorDay today. Happy to answer questions about how we care for the collections @BoltonLMS &/or about being a conservator.
This is an excellent tool in my arsenal against deterioration from @meacotweet

It’s #AskAConservatorDay did you know this was first held in memory of the 1966 Florence floods which happened on the 4th November. Flood awareness is increasingly important with climate change. Ask if you need some advice on caring for wet objects
Day 2 #Museum30 my Introduction to Museums was early, one of my first memories is aged about 4 seeing Daniel Lamberts trousers @leicestermuseum now over 40 years later I’m privileged to care for collections and manage a brilliant team
Late to the #Museum30 party as usual so I’m catching up
Day 1 #Museum has to be @BoltonLMS I’ll be proud to have worked for the people of Bolton for 20years in April

Our final top find discovered at #LaCotte is a flint tool about 160,000 yrs old. It appears to have been valued by its #Neanderthal owner as it was re-sharpened many times. Found alongside a bone heap, it could have been used as part of the butchery of a mammoth carcass.
#InternationalCatDay Milo is frequently known as “little S**t” not his guilty face I caught him just in time before he pushed the glass off the worktop tonight

Around 1420 AD a cat peed on this manuscript and a Deventer scribe added illustrations of the event, by drawing hands pointing toward the stain and cursing the feline with the following words:
Can’t have #InternationalCatDay without a Milo appearance here he is having cuddles after I got in late this evening.

Sound on to hear a #dormouse snoring 💤
The ranger team (who are licenced to handle dormice) were out checking nesting boxes in the Teign Valley recently. This snoring dormouse was in a state of deep sleep called ‘torpor’ to conserve energy.
📷 Thanks to Ranger Luke
