𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐚 🇸🇴 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐜𝐨 🇲🇦 : 𝐚 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐟𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭, 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐚 𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐥 I went back through every statement, communiqué and meeting worth considering to see how this relationship evolved: 07/2016: Somalia 🇸🇴 signs (with 27 other African countries) a motion to the African Union calling for the suspension of the so-called “SADR”. 11/2016: Somalia 🇸🇴 walks out (with 7 other countries) of the Africa-Arab summit over the presence of the so-called “SADR”. 03/2019: Somalia 🇸🇴 declares: “We stand with Morocco 🇲🇦 on the question of its territorial integrity.” 11/2020: Somalia 🇸🇴 explicitly backs the measures taken by Morocco 🇲🇦 to defend its El Guergarat border crossing. 04/2022: Somalia’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs attends the inauguration of a research center in Dakhla. 09/2022: Somalia 🇸🇴 announces it will open a consulate in Dakhla and states it “supports the territorial integrity of Morocco 🇲🇦.” 10/2023: Somalia’s embassy in Rabat 🇸🇴 is inaugurated. 31/10/2025: Somalia 🇸🇴 votes in favor of Resolution 2797 at the UN Security Council 🇺🇳. 28/11/2025: Somalia 🇸🇴 “reaffirms its support for Morocco’s 🇲🇦 sovereignty” and “congratulates” the adoption of Resolution 2797. Then came the U-turn... ⬇️ 06/12/2025: Somalia 🇸🇴 merely “takes note” of Resolution 2797, calls on “the parties to negotiate” and pledges to “respect the sovereignty of every country” (see 3rd image). 30/10/2026: Somalia 🇸🇴 abstains on the US draft at the UN Security Council 🇺🇳, warning that some provisions “could prejudge the outcome of the negotiations”, then votes for Russia’s alternative text. By the way, Somalia 🇸🇴 never opened the Dakhla consulate it has promised to open back in 2022.
