Federal child welfare financing is structured in ways that too often make family separation the path of least resistance, when it should be the last resort.
In a new @TheHill op-ed, Joanna Lack explains why we need to rethink outdated assumptions about what government should do when families struggle.

Today, United Family Advocates released a report calling for the most significant modernization of federal child welfare funding in decades.
@UFAdvocates' bipartisan proposal creates a simpler, more accountable funding framework that prioritizes child safety, family stability, and measurable outcomes. It’s time to focus on helping families before a crisis leads to separation.

For those not acquainted with foster care, there are troubling and largely hidden arrangements where parents can lose their children without the protections and oversight that accompany a formal foster care case.
Thank you to @LaurenMPeace and @teghan_simonton of @TB_Times for exposing the plight of families caught in the middle and to UFA members @MrACBrown and @JoshGuptaKagan for helping to inform this important story. tampabay.com/investigations/…

President Trump has kicked 1.5 million children off food stamps over the last year; I saw the pain everywhere on a 1,000-mile road trip. But I also saw heroism: local food pantries, teachers, churches and others trying desperately to push back the night. nytimes.com/2026/08/15/opini…

For @nytimes, I wrote about how, in recent years, parents have been investigated — or even arrested — for letting their children walk to the store, play in the park or ride their bicycles unsupervised.

Politically, there are few things Sec. Buttigieg and I agree upon. As a conservative who has dedicated my career to child welfare reform, my heart goes out to his family. Stories like this are horrific and far too common. It’s why we banned anonymous reporting in Texas.
This week someone targeted my family for harm with a false report. We’re physically OK, but that doesn’t mean we weren’t harmed. I am beyond furious.
Whatever your politics, this is awful, wrong, and can never become normal. substack.com/home/post/p-203…

Thriving on taxpayer money, for-profit facilities that care for adoptees face limited oversight. One mother who says her son was bullied and sexually assaulted wrote to the agency that funded his stay: “The almighty dollar will prevail once again.” apnews.com/article/adopted-c…

In order to justify an emergency removal of a child, the danger is supposed to be “so immediate, so urgent that the child’s life or safety will be at risk.” Despite this, in the past few years, New York’s child-welfare agency has taken around 1,400 children annually on an emergency basis, many of whose cases involve no allegations of abuse. newyorkermag.visitlink.me/pw…
