Europe has fragmented capital markets so if can’t compete with the US’s scale. This is something that the right is against, through #Brexit. xitter.cf/rejoinnowuk/status/211…
Replying to @MichaelAArouet
You miss the actual most important fact that Europe has fragmented capital markets so if can’t compete with the US’s scale.
This is something that the right is against, through Brexit. Expecting the UK with a $4.3 trillion gdp and 70 million population against the US with a 80 trillion stock market, 340 million population and $33 trillion GDP is crazy.
#Brexit makes the world go round: reintegrating #BrexitBritain with the European economy may be ‘the growth strategy that actually works’, says FT Economics Editor
xitter.cf/lizwebstersbf/status/2…
‼️ Britain has spent years desperately searching for a growth strategy while refusing to confront the enormous economic barrier we erected ourselves.
Now the FT Economics Editor asks whether @andyburnham may finally be “stumbling towards a pro-growth policy that actually shifts the dial”.
Reintegrating Britain with the European economy.
Goldman Sachs estimates:
Customs union: around +1% GDP
Single Market: around +2–5% GDP
The OBR estimates Brexit itself has reduced Britain’s potential productivity by 4%.
And the really interesting part is that I nvestors are starting to sit up and pay attention.
This is why the argument that reopening Britain’s relationship with Europe simply creates another “dust cloud of uncertainty” gets it backwards.
Brexit created barriers, uncertainty and lost investment.
Undoing Brexit is the biggest pro-growth reform available to Britain.
Fixing Brexit may turn out to be Burnham’s growth strategy. 🇬🇧🇪🇺
Yet another barrier to trading with the EU Thanks #Brexit New levy on non-EU parcels to start on 1st November
A Swiss-style deal for #BrexitBritain: ‘Europe will want to show how cooperation can get you nice stuff in a way that aggravation won’t, and in this arrangement, it can be more flexible and even supportive of pro-Europeans in the UK.’

‘The Times reports that #BrexitBritain is already holding talks with the EU about a potential return to freedom of movement and other options for much closer alignment.’
xitter.cf/lizwebstersbf/status/2…
🚨 This is HUGE.
The Times reports that Britain is already holding talks with the EU about a potential return to freedom of movement and other options for much closer alignment.
The options that will eventually be put to the British public are being discussed with Brussels now, to establish what both sides could agree.
“The conversation is happening.”
The 2024 red lines of no Single Market, no customs union, no freedom of movement only apply to this Parliament.
What comes next is now being worked through.
Burnham meets EU leaders on 20 November. He says he wants Britain to rejoin the EU in his lifetime. And tonight we learn officials are already discussing the possible routes with Brussels.
This is no longer a hypothetical debate about whether Britain might one day change course.
🎉 The process of deciding how far Britain moves back towards Europe has finally begun. 🇬🇧🇪🇺
Naomi has polling evidence, I have trade policy evidence that Made in Europe means #BrexitBritain being further squeezed out of manufacturing supply chains, and that talking about Freedom of Movement is a response to that.
