Most politicians promise to fight inflation. Milei is destroying the machine that creates it. Argentina’s lower house just approved a reform barring the Central Bank from financing the government treasury, effectively ending the political class from accessing money from inflation. Since 2008, American Libertarians have heard the term “End the Fed!” Shouted from the roof tops, now, Argentinian Libertarians have moved the ball, pending ratification by the Senate. That matters because inflation is the hidden tax. Politicians spend money they do not have, and instead of raising your taxes directly, they steal from your purchasing power and the value of your wages by printing money which results in inflation. Milei’s answer is simple: a government cut off from an unlimited line of credit will act less irresponsibly. Understandably, Argentina’s socialists are fuming, as they cannot use the state to force and defraud others to pay for their schemes if there is no money to fund it. After decades of inflation and an economic crises, Milei has promised to curb inflation for good. If Argentina can permanently separate government spending from money creation, it will have done more to reduce inflation than nearly any modern nation on Earth. Afuera.
