This was inevitable. I’m not sure even Trump and Elon expected this level of blowback. Ultimately, they have blood on their hands.
SpaceX Investor @GerberKawasaki tells me he’s not only “disgusted…from a humanity perspective” by restrictions on Starlink in Ukraine, but also: “…they've given everybody a reason not to use Starlink, that Starlink isn't reliable for national security for anybody but Trump.”

There is something deeply wrong with a political system that allows one trillionaire to buy his own personal U.S. Senator.

People saying it’s Manchester United’s worst defeat in the Champions League since the 4-0 loss at Camp Nou in 1994. I was there for that and knew something was up when I saw Peter Schmeichel having a coffee in the press room an hour before kick-off. The 4-0 was bad but there were excuses, the 3+2 rule, Schmeichel sacrificed, and the quality of Barcelona – Romario, Stoichkov, Koeman, Guardiola. United's 4-1 loss to Como is worse. No excuses. No energy. Just a terrible performance, bordering on the spineless, summing up all the lack of leadership and responsibility-taking at the club. So much wrong about the club, from the Glazers with their debt, to the board and naïve recruitment. The team crying out for full-backs and a back-up striker and splurging money on midfielders, including a reserve from Chelsea and a player in Tielemans whose best years are behind him, who needs legs around him and whose main attraction was arguably his release clause. The dysfunctional, divided nature of the United family absolutely summed up by Bruno Fernandes during and after the game. A captain who failed to raise his own game or rally his players. A supposed leader who has now questioned his manager’s tactics. Michael Carrick's tactics and changes can certainly be questioned. He may eventually pay the price for the shambles in Como. It's cheaper than shipping out the under-performing players. But Carrick is not the real problem. He doubtless sees players who lack his passion for the shirt. He could be forgiven for looking at Wilcox and Berrada and thinking how badly he was let down in the summer transfer window. And he's on the brink. Manchester United may be ousting the one individual who cares most about the team and the club. Which sums up the total mess they are in. #MUFC

And, of course, the 🐐@martynziegler — whose work has dominated the back and front pages again and again, changing sporting history along the way, and who deservedly bagged scoop and sports journalist of the year.
Delighted to have won journalist of the year at the London Press Club awards 🏆 congratulations too to top colleagues @patrickkmaguire (here holding his bust of Lord Salisbury) and @larisamlbrown

I grew up loathing Soviet apologists and I grow old loathing Putin apologists.
Steve Witkoff to Vladimir Putin, the man who unleashed the biggest war in Europe since 1945: “You talk so much about my president, President Trump, being the humanitarian. You are, you are humanitarian also, sir, and I salute that. I commend you”.

The staggering thing, watching #MUFC, is that they went into this season believing they had finally addressed their longstanding weakness in midfield. Three midfielders signed at a total cost of around £150m — two of them starting tonight — and they're outplayed, outrun and outfought in almost every game they play. Hard to see what it's even meant to look like. That's some rebuild

🎸🔥24-year-old Tracy Chapman, virtually unknown at the time, was suddenly pushed onto the Wembley Stadium stage as a last-minute replacement when Stevie Wonder couldn't perform due to a major technical glitch (his synth hard disk went missing). Armed with just her acoustic guitar and raw vocals, she delivered "Fast Car" and left the massive 72,000-person crowd in absolute stunned silence within seconds. This iconic 1988 moment literally launched her career overnight—does it give you goosebumps too? If you've ever heard "Fast Car" live (or even just this version) and didn't get chills or teary-eyed, drop your story below—I need to hear it!

Striking how fast Reform went from free-press defenders to calling for the arrest of journalists who investigate it. Its move to the populist-authoritarian model is unlikely to do much for its poll rating.
STATEMENT: Reform UK has reported ITV, its board, and its undercover reporters to the police. Some of the crimes carry up to 10 years in prison. They forged a passport. They directly interfered in elections and almost certainly altered the results. Being paid to “canvass” for Reform in crucial wards we lost by a few dozen votes. They lied to a veteran about their service and left him “violated”. This is unprecedented. The police are now involved. Scrutiny of political parties is one thing. But anyone breaking the law to try and ruin the lives of Reform’s staff, members or volunteers will be reported to the police and pursued relentlessly in the courts. Here’s what happened 👇

NOW BBC lawyers hit back at Trump's deposition delay in latest filing ... 1) Point out that Trump is the plaintiff not the defendant 2) Urge the court not to accept without question that request for delay is down to national security matters 3) Say BBC is happy to accommodate special security measures 4) Argue that request not to videorecord Trump deposition is "unexplained"
NEW Trump hits back on BBC deposition date. Says deposition cannot be videoed In latest filing, he accuses BBC of failing to fully confer with his lawyers to set date Says matters of national importance that precluded deposition included conflict in Iran (BBC says agreed date was postponed because of a rally) Trump is willing to sit for deposition within the period of January 11 through January 22, 2027

One reason I’d had enough after 19 years was the annual cuts were always sold as - ‘if we make these difficult decisions the BBC can survive for the long term’ I knew they’d be back each year. I understood why I just didn’t want to be there when they said “sorry now it’s you too”
BBC News is a good example of big cuts still to come. Today, it has told staff of 100 more job losses, saving £5.5m. That's on top of previous cuts of £25m and £1.8m. But it has to get to a total of £51m in cuts - so still plenty to come next year.

I'm old enough to remember when Greens used to campaign against hideous shopping centres being built. Now they want to preserve them.
Landsec has pulled out of its £1.5bn investment in Lewisham shopping centre, citing Mayor @LiamShrivastava's Green administration's lack of support. 300+ affordable homes, jobs, a park and a music venue: gone. Our Group Leader @Ese_Journo has written to the Mayor 👇

Same arrogant nonsense that led Putin to believe that this was going to be a 3 day war. Putin and Trump can play board games dividing the world all they want, but that’s not going to lead to any different outcome for Putin. He’s got himself a stalemate that Trump can’t help him with.
Tuberville: "Zelensky will play hardball, but you know what? He's not even a player in the game. Putin, President Trump, and the people on our side will make the final decision about Ukraine's future."

Now we know why Trump suddenly turned on Ukraine just when it seemed to be winning. If Germany, or any other NATO member invoked Article 5, that would kill the Trump syndicate’s plans for lucrative deals with Putin
Putin personally ordered a new wave of attacks on @NATO countries in Europe. The Leipzig airport plot was one of the opening shots. Putin was driven by frustration with the stalled negotiations and Ukraine’s deep strikes. My report via @WSJ wsj.com/world/europe/airfiel…
