Goa is witnessing a surge in canine distemper cases, alarming veterinarians and animal welfare groups. As the disease is contagious with no cure, and euthanasia is common, one of the challenges that Goa is facing is the scientific disposal of carcasses

It is a salami slicing Goa's eco-sensitive land. And the scale of reclassification, largely from orchards, agricultural and natural cover to settlement for constructions, is unprecedented. Over 530 hectares have been unlocked under Section 39A of the Goa Town and Country Planning Act. And this is just the beginning. Read on to know more

Long before beaches and churches defined the state, Goan artisans, especially goldsmiths, made Goa a global centre of craft, with Renaissance accounts praising their skill and tracing a layered artistic tradition shaped by ecology, trade and cultural exchange. Read on to know more

SLUMS OF GOA: Indiranagar, a huge slum in Chimbel, on the outskirts of Goa’s capital, has been often described by local police as a “hideout for antisocial elements.” It was in 1973, under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s 20-Point Programme, that 360 beneficiaries—mostly labourers from ghettos at Altinho—were allotted homes in Chimbel. Named Indiranagar, this settlement soon became home to migrant families, largely from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. By the late 1980s and early 1990s, Indiranagar transformed into a haven for unskilled workers and migrants. Indiranagar has lived with the antisocial tag for far too long but has so much to offer.

Chavittunadakam — a compound of chavittu (‘to stamp’) and nadakam (‘drama’), is Kerala’s operatic form, in which the artists percuss the ground with their feet in entranced rhythms. This blend of movement and music is rooted in Portuguese legacy. Chavittunadakam not only relates epic tales but also displays the fisherfolk artists’ rhythmic grace under the pressure of climate change and societal indifference. Read on to know more

If you thought it was only Delhi that is have bad air days, #Goa hasn't been any better off. Goa is no longer the breath of fresh air it once used to be, literally, as the state is now grappling with rising levels of air pollution, especially in its capital, Panaji. The air quality index (AQI) was recorded at 332 at 1pm on Tuesday, comparable with much more polluted cities like Mumbai. With unbridled vehicles, infra and construction work, it is not going to be easy.

Hundreds of Goans have been duped of crores of rupees in a cash-for-jobs scam. Goa police have, so far, registered 20 cases across the state, including 12 in North and eight in South Goa, and 19 persons have been arrested for promising to secure govt jobs in exchange for cash.

Nearly a month after we wrote how there were allegations against @GovtofGoa chief secretary Puneet Goel being involved in a land scam in Aldona, a PIL has been filed in Bombay HC against him. Probably the first chief secretary in Goa against whom a PIL has been filed. Shows the rot that has set in the system.
The petitioners have alleged “colourable exercise of powers” by the chief secretary in the matter. They said he signed the file on March 11, approving the change of zone in the form of a correction (as TCP secretary, Goel is authorised to make these changes), two months before he purchased the property.
Do we need to say more.
There is too much coincidence in this land conversion in the quaint Aldona village. Within two months of land by the riverside being converted into settlement, @GovtofGoa chief secy buys the same land, the papers on which he allegedly put his signature to convert. Legally there is nothing wrong but then...
