My 2009 piece "Nasrallah's Turn" where I argued Nasrallah had turned decidedly towards unreason, accelerating the need for pre-emptive peacemaking: "The unfortunate irony is that just as the Obama administration & much of Europe appears ready to dispense with such simplistic...1/
For those who want to see where the options to avoid this lay, my 2008 piece in Radical Philosophy: "Although the effort to undermine Nasrallah’s rationale head-on is certainly a task that faces many hurdles, it has a reasonable chance of succeeding...1/2

In a sham proceeding, a Cairo court has fined Mada Masr chief editor @Linaattalah 3 million EGP on charges of operating a website without a license & ordered the closure of Mada Masr, one of Egypt’s last remaining independent media outlets. Lina is detained until the fine is paid

yeah uh I don't think "search and rescue" is what this is going to be used for
Purdue University's IDEAS Lab built an autonomous drone that tracks runners through dense forests completely without GPS or cloud networks.
By running 3D LiDAR mapping and obstacle-avoidance AI entirely on-chip, it can weave under tree canopies and predict target movement through blind spots in real time.
Massive implications for next-gen search & rescue and edge AI.

According to the book, Kushner got Tillerson fired for a $50 million UAE payment because Tillerson supported Qatar. This panicked Qatar because they realized Kushner was a pay-to-play operative, so they bought Kushner's New York City apartments, which were in the red, hoping this would help.

Walid is correct again with the US clap back that the US needs better diplomats as a first order of business.
‼️ Quite significant (~surprising):
A sharp US rebuke of Jumblatt’s remarks.
A State Department spokesman said :
•In keeping with his long record, Walid Jumblatt will do and say whatever is best for Walid Jumblatt, with little regard for principle, his own constituency, or the future of his country.
•Hizballah and their friends thought the so-called Islamabad Track could serve as license for Hizballah to retain its arsenal while Israel withdraws again. That was never a realistic option.
•The Trilateral Framework is an agreement between two sovereign states, with a clear, reciprocal, sequenced process. Israel has already agreed to withdraw, contingent on Hizballah disarmament and the LAF moving into pilot zones.
•Relying on Iran to disarm Hizballah is a mechanism for preserving Tehran's veto over Lebanese sovereignty.
•Hizballah has dragged Lebanon into two suicidal wars on behalf of Iran. In the end, until they are disarmed, Hizballah will do whatever their puppet-masters in Tehran tell them to do and the people of Lebanon will be forced to pay the price.
•As Ambassador Issa has said, the United States is prepared to engage Hizballah only through the Lebanese state, and only on the topic of disarmament.

Reading the Western reporting from the campaign trail in Israel, you can see the return of a fantasy: that our wayward ally might become a normal country overnight by ejecting the one man who caused all the trouble. For @equatormag, I asked @NathanThrall how to read the result:

"Iran's missile stockpile is running low."
"They aren't building missiles anymore."
That’s what many experts claimed during the war. Meanwhile, Iran launched 100+ ballistic missiles in the past week just for drill practice.

Correct. Eisenkot's doctrine paved the way to the atrocities the world has been witnessing for the past three years.

This is extremely poor. The opposition bloc is not centrist leaning and definitely not left leaning. It contains some very right wing candidates. In temrs of policy regarding Palestinians there is little difference at all
The BBC’s Middle East correspondent frames the Israeli elections as Netanyahu against “leftist” and “centrist” figures like Eisenkot, whom she describes as “softly spoken” and “lowkey”.
What she leaves out is that he’s a former general and the architect of the Dahiyeh Doctrine, which calls for disproportionate force and deliberate targeting of civilians and their infrastructure.
In what world is that left wing?

🚨🇬🇧 Lidor Dafna filmed himself destroying one of the last remaining food production facilities serving a starving population, then posted the footage on social media as a trophy. The United Kingdom now faces a simple test: will it arrest and prosecute a man, who remains an active soldier of an army carrying out such crimes, or once again permit a perpetrator of genocide to walk freely on its soil and return to Gaza and Lebanon to continue committing his crimes? We have filed our complaint. Now it is up to the British authorities to act.
🇬🇧🚨The #HindRajabFoundation, has filed a criminal complaint in the United Kingdom against Lidor Dafna, an Israeli soldier serving in the 603rd Combat Engineering Battalion of the 7th Armored Brigade, for war crimes and genocide committed in the Gaza Strip. Dafna is now walking free in London, touring the city. ➡️ More → bit.ly/4kiw1mF

Misunderstanding the awareness that is inexorably developing: "the core escalatory drivers: the US & Israel" are the ones that need to be confronted not appeased. That is what's dawning on all actors. What constitutes push back/confrontation is the question & the mix behind it.
Replying to @AlanEyre1
Sure, what I'm saying is that this summit doesn't get at the core escalatory drivers: the US and Israel.
Unless KSA et al succeed in pulling key concessions from Iran, communicating those concessions to the US, and successfully convincing Trump to hold off on any new attack.

Significant even brave intervention by Oman foreign minister @badralbusaidi at Cambridge calling for the Gulf States to form a non-aggression pact with Iran and Iraq. Says US should no longer be primary provider of security in region, adding external partners have imposed the most damaging of the priorities - "the requirement that Iran be excluded. Not just excluded. Worse. Positioned as the threat against which regional security had to be organised."
He argues "What holds us back is that issues which ought to be handled at a regional level by the states of the Gulf themselves, are made more complex, more intractable and sometimes simply impossible to resolve because the region's security arrangements are insufficiently developed.
"And they are insufficiently developed because they have relied for too long on the involvement of external powers.
"The complications which stand in the way of successful resolutions to both the Iranian nuclear issue and the question of free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz are simply the latest effects of an unstable combination of power projection and dependency in the Gulf.
"In other words, the nuclear issue and the Hormuz issue are both impossible to resolve because external powers continue to define the terms of engagement, while regional powers are unable to take collective responsibility for making their own security arrangements and reach a consensus on them".
Says Iran "has for nearly half a century been systematically excluded from playing any meaningful role in the security arrangements of the region.
"An exclusion with profoundly negative consequences, not just for Iran, but for the region as a whole".
He says "Instead of a genuine security structure designed to maintain stable relations between the eight states of the Gulf, an unstable regional system has been constructed on the entirely false perception that there is a fundamental regional antagonism between Iran and the Arab states of the Gulf.
"There is no such fundamental antagonism. There are problems, yes, of course. But the plain fact is that Arabs and Persians have lived in peace around the Gulf for centuries. It’s not a matter of whether you’re friendly or hostile to Iran.
"Today, Persia is a fact, 93 million people and three thousand years of history. Roughly half of the Gulf littoral.
"Any Gulf security architecture that doesn’t include them is inherently unstable. It’s structurally unsound. And recent events expose the terrible cost of allowing the false perception of antagonism and exclusion."
"It is us, in the Gulf, who ultimately bear the responsibility for devising, developing and implementing a new regional security structure.
The time has come when it no longer makes sense just to blame everyone else.
We need to begin a new regional dialogue on Gulf security, and we need to do so before other solutions are imposed on the region which would effectively consolidate the pattern of dependency and exclusion for which we urgently need to find an alternative.
What is needed, instead, is a new and inclusive framework, involving all eight Gulf littoral states".
No idea if true but this is what princes and kings do when confronted by countervailing power that could significantly challenge their family rule and they can’t kill their way around it:
BREAKING: Saudi Arabia offers Yemen's Houthis $1 billion through Tehran to halt their attacks as part of a ceasefire, with Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman flying to Iran to negotiate it and even bringing the money with him aboard the C-130 aircraft he arrived on, per diplomatic Gulf sources to Israel Hayom.
Iran offered to mediate between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis. It was represented by President Pezeshkian, SNSC chief Mohsen Rezaei and senior IRGC officials. Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin and Pakistan's army chief Asim Munir were also taking part.
This is one of the biggest concessions from the Saudis yet.
