#dday 🌹 Sgt Eric Lightowler. The son of my grandad’s sister Edith. He was the pilot of a glider, the first to go down in Normandy on June 6th 1944. He was killed & his body was found on the water. He was only 24. Our hero 🙏🏻💙 #dday. We will never forget you Eric #secondcousin

UTAH Beach, just before the landings tomorrow.
This is a map. Okay, it's a model - but it saved lives as men saw the lie (and the truth) of the land.
It was used in briefings and then saved by Lt Commander Charles Lee Burwell (you'll meet him in a sec). @WeHaveWaysPod #dday80

#Normandy After the thread I did on the British involvement on Pointe du Hoc, I ended up thinking about Juno Beach. Often called the "Canadian beach", about 1/3 of the 21.000 men landing there were British. A thread on those Brits killed on Juno Beach 🧵

Jerusalem, a small hamlet near the village of Chouain, was the scene of bitter fighting when a German armoured column sought to retake Bayeux shortly after its liberation in the Battle of Normandy.

I have 6 days left to go before my challenge. I am just over £500 short of my target and I'm sure we will reach it. The £2000 will help cover a veterans place on the @TaxiCharity D-Day80 pilgrimage.
A huge thank you to all those who have supported already.
Please help and support me if you can, it is greatly appriciated by the veterans and the charity.
***** My 2024 Challenge *****
As many of you know due to a spinal condition my options on physical activities are limited. This challenge gives me a chance to raise some money for the @TaxiCharity.
In March I will be walking 25km in hopefully 5hrs on the bridge to bridge route.
My intention is to raise £2,000 for the Taxi Charity. This matches a Libor funding place for one veteran and career to return to Normandy for the 80th anniversary in June. The costs have risen for this year and I’m hoping this will go towards ensuring a veteran can attend with the support of the charity.

#Normandy It is this time of the year again when the Normandy marshes are flooded, turning them "white". A good idea of how challenging was the landscape near some US DDay Dropzones for the men of the 82nd and 101st Airborne.

This is Fecamp, upper Normandy. The Germans designated this area with the prefix Fe. There are some exquisite remains in this area. Seen here the 636 type bunker for fire control, V 143 command post and radar installation. The garrison here had outstanding views. #WW2

As many of you know, I've been planning to launch a new Youtube series covering various aspects of military history and related topics in film, tv, games, etc.. Here is an early concept graphic- I'm thinking about calling it "The History Hangout Club"- HHC for short.

There are four 671 type bunkers here at H.K.A.R. Ecquiville, France. Front end & a view from the backside, going in looking out through the gun room. The Heer had Czech 10.5 cm guns emplaced here. Bottom right ammo storage. This is a very clean batterie for the most part #WW2

I think we need a bit of a break from the news and it's been a while since I did one of these, so here's another D-Day from above. I don't think I've done this photo before (hope not) but it's a good one. 📷NARA
