He did the best he could and about as well as the average gamer. No shade, it takes superior players and serious intellectual firepower to get the full value out of a game of AD&D. It's not for everyone.

Skill issue. This game is not too deadly. Combat is deadly, but that's a different question. Smart players find alternative solutions outside the combat system, or do everything possible to stack odds in their favor before the balloon goes up.

Many claim WFRP is too deadly for a dungeon crawler, but classic RPGs were just as brutal. My advice? Warn your players that this isn't a latter RPG-style power fantasy. Make it clear that character death and permanent disfigurement are on the table.
