Cambodia and Thailand signed a joint statement at the third Special General Border Committee meeting on December 27, confirming an immediate ceasefire effective at 12:00 noon. Both sides agreed to halt all attacks, including against civilians and civilian infrastructure, and to freeze troop positions with no further movement or reinforcement.
The agreement commits both countries to de-escalation, allowing displaced civilians to return home safely, refraining from provocative actions, airspace violations, and misinformation, and respecting international law and borders. The ASEAN Observer Team will monitor implementation, with coordination mechanisms and direct military communication lines in place.
The statement was co-signed by Tea Seiha and Nattaphon Narkphanit at the PrumโBan Pak Kard border point in Pailin.

Following my discussion with US President Donald J. Trump and in light of continued tensions along the Cambodia-Thailand border, I held separate calls with Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul of Thailand and Prime Minister Hun Manet of Cambodia.
During these exchanges, I conveyed Malaysiaโs deep concern over the situation and urged both sides to exercise maximum restraint, cease all forms of hostilities and refrain from any further military actions, including the use of force or forward movement of armed units, with effect from 13 December 2025 at 22:00 (UTC+7).
To support de-escalation and promote transparency, I have requested the deployment of the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT), led by the Malaysian Chief of Defence Forces, to monitor developments on the ground. This mission will be complemented by satellite monitoring capabilities provided by the United States Government, commencing at the same time.
Findings from the satellite monitoring and field observations will be compiled by the AOT and presented at an ASEAN Foreign Ministersโ Meeting on Tuesday, 16 December. The report will provide an objective account of the situation, including the positions of both parties, in the interest of accountability, confidence-building and the preservation of peace and stability in the region.
Malaysia remains committed to working closely with ASEAN partners and the international community to ensure that dialogue, restraint and diplomacy prevail.

An extremely detailed map of Thai and Cambodian military buildup along the Northern border of the two countries over the past year. Much of the Cambodian buildup occurred prior to July, and most of the Thai buildup has taken place since.
The key hotspots where both sides have built up are:
- Prasat Ta Muan Thom
- Prasat Ta Kwai
- Prasat Khnar
- Chong Rayi
- Phu Pha Lek
- Preah Vihear
- Prasat Doun Tuan
- Chong An Ma
- Chong Bok
By and large, Thailand appears to have focused on building accessibility to more areas of the border, whereas Cambodia has fortified specific points, with fortifications around O'Smach and Chong Sangam specifically occurring without much contestation.
Overall, especially considering the scale of road-building through the forest, Thailand has expanded their presence more significantly (especially over the past 5 months) at the border. The most significant of these, from my view, is the plateau-edge between Phu Makhuea and Phlan Hin Paet Ko. In this area, it appears that Thai forces have cut off Cambodian supply to the top of the plateau, and largely taken over these positions.
More detailed analysis of where Thailand has moved its forward-deployment line since July will be provided in future posts.

Irrespective of who fired first this morning, actions by Thailand today have certainly escalated the situation beyond the brief skirmish of yesterday, and statements like this only signal further intent for escalation.

One lost his right leg.
