despite all its issues, Wikipedia is one of the single greatest inventions in human history. there have been countless Libraries of Alexandria but this is likely the most comprehensive collection of human knowledge to ever exist and it’s available on a handheld in 350 languages
im four beers deep and i need everyone to understand that wikipedia is the last good thing. millions of strangers agreed to write down everything for free and then argue about citations forever. no ads. no paywall. this should not exist and it does and i'm crying about it

Another fav: “what is called intellectual is usually just something that demands the work and effort of listening, the force of attention and memory, actually love: in other words, emotion.” Adorno

Wikipedia is the largest encyclopedia ever written by humans—and it is likely to hold that title for ever. (Any future rival is sure to be made with the help of AI) bit.ly/4iO1Sum Illustration: Carl Godfrey

No modern conflict has ended by destroying the enemy’s ability to resist—not even World War II. To end a war, both sides must choose to stop fighting, and those choices always require nontrivial bargaining. Misunderstanding the relationship between bargaining and fighting produces systematic failures to integrate negotiating strategy with campaign planning, from Afghanistan to Ukraine to the US war with Iran. New piece in @ForeignAffairs with Stephen Biddle and Yuri Zhukov on the myth of military victory.

From the author who brought you 'they flew', a historical examination of the question 'what if Medieval miracles were actually real things that happened?' comes 'my field is dead and the few jobs available require Marxist class struggle'

"Elon Musk says" is consistently the start of a sentence that ends up being one of the stupidest things that you've ever read in your life.
Elon Musk says Neuralink will allow humans to communicate with animals by 2028.
