House Democrats sign Letter of Indignation over DOJ investigating Ilhan Omar so close to election-
Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., led 175 members of the House Democratic Caucus in a letter to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Markwayne Mullin and Attorney General Todd Blanche, criticizing the probe into Omar's immigration history as a partisan attack and accusing them of trying to sway her bid for another term in Congress.
Omar, D-Minn., is under federal investigation over allegations she or her father lied about her birth year on immigration paperwork to obtain her citizenship when her family fled Somalia in the late 1990s. If she was 17 when her father obtained citizenship, as previously thought, she would have automatically qualified along with him. If she was 18 or older, which federal officials now suspect, she would have had to make her own application.
The letter included: "Congresswoman Omar is seeking reelection in Minnesota’s 5th congressional district in just one week. News of the search warrant, whether properly predicated or not, could affect voters’ decisions, which is exactly why federal law enforcement should not engage in such conduct when voters are casting their ballots. This type of interference strips Minnesotans of their right to a free and fair election guaranteed to them under the Constitution," the letter said.
"We stand with Congresswoman Omar and condemn the weaponization of law enforcement against her. You have already disgraced the offices you hold, and we demand you refrain from taking any further actions that could affect the outcome of the upcoming election."

The Rose Madder plant, Rubia tinctorum, has been used for millennia to produce a variety of red dyes. They were used anciently in Egypt, Greece, Rome and India. It was also used as the dye for the British military’s ’red coats’. To produce the color, the roots are crushed and boiled in a mildly acidic solution to break down the fibrous material. The solution is then filtered and the liquid is combined with alum which draws out the main colored compound, alizarin. To make a usable solid pigment, the aqueous solution undergoes a process called laking. A solution of sodium or potassium carbonate is added which causes the water soluble alizarin to precipitate out of the solution and settle at the bottom. The sediment is rinsed and dried. The resulting pigment, known as rose madder or madder lake, was greatly valued for its brilliant, transparent crimson color and its ability to create delicate glazes. Unfortunately, like many botanically derived pigments, it was very fugitive, meaning it faded in light, especially when used in thin layers and glazes.
Despite its tendency to fade, it was very popular with artists. An example can be seen in Johannes Vermeer’s painting, ‘Christ in the House of Martha and Mary’. Mary’s red coat is madder lake.
In 1869, German chemists Carl Liebermann and Carl Gräbe discovered how to make alizarin, making it the first natural color to be synthesized. The pure form of alizarin was more light-fast than the plant-derived version. The demand for natural madder collapsed when it became much more inexpensive to produce synthetically.
Today, alizarin is still produced in a limited amount for use as an artist’s color, but because of its poor light fastness, it has largely been replaced by synthetic organic pigments like anthraquinones, and quinacridones, which offer the same color and transparency with excellent lightfastness.
