I’m fascinated by Gen Z’s LGBTQ+ identification: Among Millennials, LGBTQ+ identification hovers around 10%; among Gen Z, it’s more than twice that—20.8%. It’s impossible to say what the true figure is; sexual orientation is a spectrum. Gender and sexual identity are fluid. Part of this leap is queer people feeling more open to share that identity. But I think this trend-line is indicative of a broader shift: more fluid identity and self-expression. That’s what interests me most. Part of the sharp uptick above is cultural: it has become more acceptable to exist on the spectrum, to not be black-or-white, in-or-out. This has ripple effects in how people form online identities: everything from the skins we wear in Fortnite to vTubing on Twitch. We can "try on" & share more identities. For a younger generation, the internet has made identity more multi-faceted, contextual, and nuanced.
