🚗📉 India's auto retail sales fall 23.8% in October to 31.72 lakh units; EVs hit record high
India recorded 31,72,466 vehicle registrations in October 2026, down 23.8% year-on-year. Sales rose 25.05% over September, according to Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations.
📊 Two-wheelers take the biggest hit: Registrations fell 28.35% to 23.21 lakh units. Rural sales dropped 33.97%, against a 20.77% decline in urban markets.
🚘 Passenger vehicles: Sales fell 14.23% to 5.08 lakh units. October was still the segment's third-best month.
🚛 Commercial vehicles hold up: Sales grew 2.29% to 1.15 lakh units, an October record. Three-wheelers and tractors also posted their best October sales.
⚡ EVs hit a record: Registrations reached 3.55 lakh units, up 44.88%. EV penetration rose to 11.5%, from 6% last year. Electric models accounted for nearly 63% of three-wheeler sales.
📦 Inventory remains high: Passenger vehicle stock stood at 43–45 days. FADA expects it to fall towards 30 days by year-end.
🪔 November outlook: 51.65% of surveyed dealers expect sales to grow this month. Another 34.71% expect sales to remain flat. Dhanteras and Diwali fall in November this year.
🔍 The big takeaway: October's decline reflects a high festive-season base in 2025 and the shift of Diwali buying to November. FADA expects festive demand to support this month's sales.
